4.0 out of 5 stars Great way to make tea
I chose the Bodum Curl because I liked the style and the footprint. Some of the others take up a lot of counter space. This one has a small base. It's omnidirectional so you can easily place the pot back on its base. It heats the water to boil quickly. I didn't time it because it's more than satisfactory. I also had to get two to get this one to work. The first one, the switch did not stay on. The second one worked for 6 months, then just stopped working. Don't bother getting this one.

I chose the Bodum Curl because I liked the style and the footprint. Some of the others take up a lot of counter space. This one has a small base. It's omnidirectional so you can easily place the pot back on its base. It heats the water to boil quickly. I didn't time it because it's more than satisfactory. What I didn't like is the water level indicator. It's only on one side which is inconsiderate for left handers. Also, it's hard to read. I like full-length guages that you can see the level, not just a red bubble float when it happens to pass the window. I would like the base to weigh a bit more. If I bump into the cord, it will move the base because it is so light. I would also like the handle to be more solid. It's curved plastic. It would feel more comfortable if it was solid. Don't get the wrong impression from my criticism. I feel that this is the best electric teapot available for the money. It turns off automatically when the water boils or when it is dry. The lever switch glows red when it is on. It has a filter in the spout to help keep the cruddlies out of your tea. Good teakettle....

5.0 out of 5 stars Best cordless kettle around !!, December 29, 2002
By
This review is from: Bodum 5600-01-03US Curl Cordless Electric Water Kettle, White with Black Lid (Kitchen)
Been looking for a really good cordless kettle ever since we moved back from England six years ago. This one's the best, although I prefer the black-on-black model. Super-duper element heats water FAST. Ours is great. FYI, the switch will not go into the 'on' position unless there's water in the pot--safety feature. Also, product info states that a bead of water may form at the base of the pot when it reaches boiling--that's normal. It will be dramatically worse if you overfill the pot. But who needs to overfill? It has a huge capacity. Because of this product, we've gotten rid of our coffeemaker. Now we just boil up a kettle of water and use a cone filter to drip directly into a thermal carafe. No overheating on an electric burner. Best coffee you've ever tasted, all day long. A full kettle makes more than a carafe, though--about two mugs' worth more--so don't walk away while you're dripping. Use a plain old low-tech camp-style cone filter holder with a size 6 filter. Try it!

5.0 out of 5 stars No more burned or tangled cords, December 22, 2002

Finally, a tea kettle that doesn't drag the cord with it. This is an excellent product with many safety features that are especially important if you have small kids or clumsy adults in the household. The unit shuts off automatically when the water boils or when it is empty. The water boils very quickly and the cord stays with the base unit so that you don't run into the danger of forgetting to unplug it when you pour the boiling water. I highly recommend this product for anyone who uses boiling water frequently, be it for tea or coffee.

Having used every type of water heater available, I highly recommend this Bodum. It is efficient, easy to use and it shuts off automatically. You can't buy a better one for the price.

3.0 out of 5 stars So-so!!, January 13, 2003

I received this item and immediately returned it to Target. It heated water VERY quickly, but the on/off switch was not very industrial. It took several attempts to make the switch stay in the "on" position. Although it was in working condition, I could easily see in breaking in a short period time.

Looks can be deceiving. From the perspective of design, this is a beautiful kettle. If you can get it to work, it does heat the water quickly, but I have now ordered two of these. The first one leaked and the replacement won't turn on (the on switch won't stay in the on position at all). I give up and suggest strongly that you look elsewhere.

3.0 out of 5 stars A few flaws, July 19, 2010

I have this, except it's got a white lid. I got it as a well-used hand-me-down five years ago and it's still boiling water like a champ. But there are three things wrong with it, IMO.

1. The fill indicator is difficult to use - as another reviewer mentioned, you can only see how full it is when it's exactly as full as one of the four indicator bubbles. I just fill it based on weight, but it would be nice to know when it's got exactly as much water as I need at any given time. I boil more water than necessary because I'd hate to have to do it twice.

2. The switch is broken. To turn it on, I have to flip it up, then press it in to make it "stick". Otherwise it just flips back down over and over. It has been this way since it was given to me.

3. The way it is designed, if you want to get all of the water out of it, your hand will get burned by steam. Your hand is fine until maybe the last 4-6 ounces, at which point the thing is practically upside down and will hurt you if you're not wearing a mitt.

So, three stars. It does what it's supposed to do, but I'll definitely take these things into consideration when I buy a kettle for myself.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bodum Bottom for Curl Fails, October 28, 2006

This review is from: Bodum 5600-01-03US Curl Cordless Electric Water Kettle, White with Black Lid (Kitchen)
Though the Bodum Curl is a convenient water heater and server, its mating lower power source bottom onto which the top water container sits eventually fails. Ours failed within a year, during daily use. When one-half of a system fails, though (in this case) the top is still usable, the entire unit has to be replaced. Becauses of the delicacy of the contacts within the lower power unit, repair is seldom possible.

It would be an instance of great customer service if Bodum would sell the lower power unit separately as a replacement item.

In contrast, my six-year-old Superior (UK) electric teakettle, also used daily, still works flawlessly.

Which do you think is the better value?
