Amazon.com Review

Coffee connoisseurs know that even with excellent coffee beans, the perfect water, and a high-quality brewing machine, coffee still will not be good without the right grind. Bodum's Antigua grinder produces a superior grind by using a sharp, hand-forged, conical stainless-steel blade so that the coffee is cut rather than crushed. An inlet cover over the blade makes it easy to grind oily beans. In addition, the two-step grinding gear has a powerful motor so that the rotation is quiet and occurs at low speeds. This keeps the beans from overheating, thereby retaining the coffee's flavor and aroma.

Measuring 8 by 10-1/2 inches, the Antigua is designed to be a smaller version of professional burr grinders for in-home use, occupying only as much counter space as a traditional 10-cup coffeemaker. Although the unit is compact, the bean container can hold up to 1/2 pound of coffee beans at a time. An airtight lid fits on the bean container and keeps beans from losing their aroma. Three grinding settings let drinkers choose their grind: fine for espresso, medium for filter coffee machines, or coarse for French press coffeemakers (or anywhere in between settings if an intermediate-level grind is desired). The timer/quantity control sets the number of minutes the beans will be grind, based on how many cups of coffee are being brewed, what type of beans are being used, and what the level of grind is. Both the bean container and the ground coffee container are transparent to monitor the grinding process, and the ground coffee container easily pulls out of the grinder for use.

An automatic power cut-out feature prevents permanent damage to the grinder by turning off the grinding gear in the event that a stone finds its way into the Antigua. The grinding gear also can be disassembled for cleaning. The Antigua comes with adequate power cord storage beneath the unit for excess cord length and a .25-ounce coffee scoop. --Cristina Vaamonde

Product Description

Burr coffee grinders have the advantage of not overheating the grounds and altering the coffee's final taste. They do this by using the slow but thorough approach vs. the high speed, noisy grinding afforded by less sophisticated machines. If you love your coffee and want to savor it at the absolute zenith of its flavor, consider this machine an indispensable member of your coffee-making team.

1.0 out of 5 stars Buyer beware!!!, January 5, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Bodum 5671-57USA Antigua Burr Grinder, Matte Chrome Finish (Kitchen)
This was my second coffee grinder and I found it to be very nearly worthless. My first machine ran for six years so my review of this machine isn't from inexperience or abusing the machine.

First of all, the espresso grind was not fine enough. The higher settings quickly went into an impractically course grind which left about two useful settings for drip or french press only.

You twist the entire top of the machine to change grinds. There's a little brush imprinted on the dial that should indicate to move the dial to this position to clean the machine, however moving the selector to that position does nothing. In order to clean the machine twist the top to move the selector to the OPPOSITE end of the scale from the cleaning indicator. Go figure.

When you grind coffee some of the grounds get behind the holder which have to be picked out before the holder can be reinserted.

The bean holder wobbles like it was designed for some other machine and stuck on this one because it 'almost' fit.

The timer knob stripped and fell off when I was trying to shut the machine off because the timer ran too long and the ground coffee holder was overfull.

Lastly, the machine just plain quit working after about a dozen uses.

If this is as good a grinder as is available, which the price would indicate, save your money and have your coffee ground at the coffee shop!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Bodum 5671-57USA Antigua Burr Grinder, Matte Chrome Finish (Kitchen)
This grinder did make a great cup of coffee BUT only worked for 5 months. It had the "Spin Free" sickness. The motor ran but nothing else happened. I mailed it back to the factory store in NY City ($12.00 in shipping) only to find out that they didn't have any crome models in stock and would not for several months.
They refunded [the cost of the grinder] very cheerfully but no mention about any shipping charges ($27.00 total, $15.00 Express shipping from Amazon and $12.00 to NY). I'm not a happy camper. I would not buy this product again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine grind, December 20, 2007
This review is from: Bodum 5671-57USA Antigua Burr Grinder, Matte Chrome Finish (Kitchen)
I have had no problems whatsoever with this grinder. When beans fail to grind it usually means you have to clean the machine as the oils have prevented the beans from moving down into the blade area. Cleaned it out for the first time in over 2 years the other day. Took all of 5 minutes to take apart, clean and reassemble.

It really has worked well for me and the only thing I could want would be a doser model. So eventually I will upgrade, but waiting for it to die does not seem to be working!
