Product Description

Amazon.com Review

Combining modern materials and clever styling, Bodum's Assam drinkware brings a truly innovative look to the table. The walls of each vessel are actually two layers of clear glass, creating an optical illusion that the liquid is suspended within. Highlighting the dramatic effect, the Assam shape features slightly concave sides that flare out as they reach the smooth, round rim.

This set of two double wall shot/espresso glasses serves silver tequila or extra-strong coffee with equal ease. Crafted of borosilicate glass, which is also used to make scientific lab equipment, the pair is exceptionally strong, lightweight, and thermal. The two-layer construction also resists heat and prevents condensation, so no matter what temperature the beverage is, the glasses remain comfortable to hold and safe for any tabletop. Winner of the prestigious European IF Design Award, this 3-ounce, scratch-resistant set goes safely into the dishwasher and microwave. Mix and match Assam with the Pavina and Canteen lines for a variety of fun shapes. --Kara Karll

Editor's Note: Because the glasses are mouth blown, each one may have slight variations in height, thickness, and weight. Bodum recommends using care when placing ice into the glass to avoid fracturing the inner layer. Do not use metal spoons or place the glass into a crowded dishwasher.

Product Description

The Bodum Double Wall Assam Shot/Espresso Glasses are 3 ounces in size and can be used for cold or warm beverages. Its unique design is appealing to the eye when filled with your favorite beverage. With its double layer of borosilicate glass it appears as though the liquid is 'floating' within the glass. This size also works nicely for sake and green tea. The double wall creates a thermal effect, helping to keep your cold drinks cold and your hot drinks hot for longer periods of time. These mouth blown glasses are an exciting product for any home, restaurant, and cafe and are a definite conversation piece. The double wall also makes for a nice votive candle holder, eliminating wax spills and the need for a coaster. Bodum’s insulated glassware is made from durable Borosilicate glass. Borosilicate glass is a strong heat-resistant glass traditionally used to make scientific lab glass. Stronger than traditional “soda-lime” glass, borosilicate can be used for everything from drinkware to cookware. Borosilicate glass substitutes boron oxide in place of the soda and lime used in everyday glassware. The boron oxide acts as the glue holding the silicate together. Due to small size of boron particles, the glass is held together tighter, resulting in a stronger, lighter glass. Borosilicate glass doesn’t need to be as thick as traditional glass to be just as strong due to the bonding capability boron oxide. Borosilicate is simply a different type of glass that is resistant to temperature swings and scratching. Because the particles are held together so tightly, borosilicate glass is resistant to temperature swings, In addition to being dishwasher safe borosilicate will not become cloudy over time; you can rest assured that after 1,000 cycles, the glass will be as clear as the day you bought it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I bought 4 sets, February 15, 2007
This review is from: Bodum Assam Double-Wall Shot/Espresso Glasses, Set of 2 (Kitchen)
I was going to get the Pavlina kind, but what drew me to these is the 3oz size (vs 2oz on the others) - so a 2oz espresso with a huge head of crema fits nicely, or you have space for a dash of cream, foam or whatever you temper your coffee with.

The design is very conventional and pleasant to hold. It kind of reminds me of a shape-holding balloon, no sharp edges and fits perfectly in the hand, like you were pressing on it (even if you aren't)

There's a kind of satisfaction that's hard to quantify. I love to hold these, I love the layers of espresso, crema and occasional cream visible from the side. They even feel nice when being washed, maybe the lack of sharp edges and corners. I always prefer function over form, though in this case it's hard to tell where one ends and the other begins, and they don't trade off against each other.

The only problem I have is that my son wants to drink milk from these, and it takes him four fill-ups to get through his normal glass of milk.

The only real issues with these cups are that they are a little fragile.

I used a pair of the 3 oz. Assam version of Bodum's espresso cups as my main shot cups for months. Fantastic heat retention, no need to preheat like with some demitasse cups.

They are safe to use in dishwashers but with the light weight tend to bounce around so I'd recommend just hand washing.

The only real questions you have with these Bodum espresso cups is whether 2 or 3 oz. is a better size for you (I lean toward 3 oz. for general use. Holds a double easily and a little foamed milk if you like) and what shape you prefer.

Be careful with them and you'll love 'em. they break very, very easily.

Other than that, they're wonderful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, if a bit more fragile than other glasses, March 12, 2008

I choose these over the otherwise nice Pavina style because I usually prefer to pull 1 1/2 ounce shots and I usually want a 3 oz double. They are visually fantastic - it's great to pull a shot for guests and show them the crema levels I get with my fresh roasted beans. They keep the espresso warmer than most glasses, though for the best heat retention you'll want to preheat with water or steam. Since espresso is best right away this is less important in this size though! I have the cappuccino size version of these as well as the Pavinas -- the Assam versions are easier to hold and thus drink from and clean. The wide opening helps catch both streams of espresso from my machine, too. It didn't keep me from breaking one on the edge of the sink in a moment of carelessness, alas. But they are a great value for the aesthetics and performance and I'll definitely replace with the same.
