4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome but fragile
I really love the Bodum Insulated Glasses, and that lead me to buy this Iced Tea Maker.
This Pitcher works wonderfully, but doesn't get 5 stars because it is so fragile. I'm on my second one, after breaking my first one by glancing it off of my refrigerator handle. The lid stopper, also, is not a very good design (it sometimes falls off when pouring steeply) but...

1.0 out of 5 stars Broke after less than 1 month of very careful use..., January 30, 2009
This review is from: Bodum Bistro Glass Iced Tea Maker with Removable Stainless-Steel Filter (Kitchen)
I got this item as a Christmas gift from my husband. We were upgrading from a Mr Coffee type iced tea maker to avoid exposure to heated up plastics since I am pregnant. After less than 1 month of use (very gentle use, during which time we never tried to put the item in the dishwasher), the glass pitcher cracked upon addition of cold water to boiling tea. I went to the manufacturer's website and it turns out they offer no warranty for any of their glass parts. They advertise the glass to be heat-resistant and they instruct you to add ice and cold water to the boiling water - just as I did, which caused the glass to crack. They suggest purchasing a replacement glass part from them - but there is not a replacement glass part available on their website for this particular item. For $60 I was hoping to get a lot more use out of this item than 3 weeks. Either the specific pitcher we received was defective in some way, or this is not a high quality product and cannot be used as advertised.

Update - I contacted the manufacturer and they agreed to replace the product 1 time. However, they claimed in their response that you should never add ice or cold water to boiling water in glass or it will break (which is intuitive, but goes against their provided instructions for the product) and they basically claimed it was my fault the product broke. When I get the replacement I will wait until the boiling water has cooled to room temperature before adding cold water and ice and refrigerating.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not buy !, June 12, 2009
This review is from: Bodum Bistro Glass Iced Tea Maker with Removable Stainless-Steel Filter (Kitchen)
This is very frail; absolutely cannot pour boiling water into it! The lid comes in three parts , which don't stay together , so when you try to pour , parts fall off into your cup .The lid is permantly open to air so the tea takes up all the flavors of the refrigerator . Truly one of the worst designed products I have come across .

This Pitcher works wonderfully, but doesn't get 5 stars because it is so fragile. I'm on my second one, after breaking my first one by glancing it off of my refrigerator handle. The lid stopper, also, is not a very good design (it sometimes falls off when pouring steeply) but this is a minor point when compared with how nice the rest of the product is.
Don't buy this if you can't treat it like fine china. Do buy it if you can.

A tip: the top edge is the most fragile part, so Always have the lid in place (without the stopper) when adding ice, so the hard ice can't impact said top edge.

One more thing. Bodum should sell replacement pitchers (without the stainless insert and top pieces) for those that do break theirs.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS THING!!!, July 19, 2009

I read all the reviews for this and among the whiners that add boiling water and crack this beautiful Tea Maker were happy people that that added Hot water and brewed successfully.

In A Tea Kettle I bring the water to a boil, then turn off the heat and let the Kettle sit for 10 minutes.

After the slight cooling period,I pour the hot water in and after several minutes I have the greatest tasting tea all brewed and strong enough to bring to a chill by pouring over ice.

I'm now a coffee in the morning and ice tea on these hot summer days kinda guy.

Great Stuff!!!!

I saw the other reviews saying this pitcher is very fragile, but I decided to buy it anyway figuring it would be OK as long as I was extremely careful with it. I was wrong. Despite my care, the pitcher cracked after only a few uses.

It is almost beyond belief that Bodum can sell a product this fragile. Needless to say, I'll be steering clear of Bodum products from now on.

It is too bad because this was the only pitcher and filter I found on the market made almost entirely of glass and metal. I now use the filter in a heavy glass pitcher where it works very well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Goodbye Mr. Tea!, December 24, 2008

My husband was very skeptical about having his "Mr. Iced Tea" replaced with this stylish Bodum Tea Maker. After his first glass of tea he was pleasantly surprised to find he was enjoying the best glass of tea he had ever had! Thinking maybe it was "beginner's luck" for the new teamaker, he remained skeptical. Not for long!! Now after an entire month of enjoying the tea, both iced and hot, he is completely convinced that I made the right choice. Goodbye Mr. Tea!

This Tea Maker is great. It does, at least seem to, require gentle handling but it so easy to use. I used to use an "iced tea machine" but this is easier to use and does not require timely cleanup. The only improvement I would like to see is a larger size.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice carafe, but glass is too thin, January 11, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Bodum Bistro Glass Iced Tea Maker with Removable Stainless-Steel Filter (Kitchen)
When I read these reviews, I thought that people were mistreating the jar and that was the reason why it was breaking, but I was mistaken. I use it to make tea, so I would fill it up with warm water and brew the tea before serving it. However, within 4 uses, the carafe cracked even when I was very careful with it, not stiring ice in, but letting it cool and moving it to the refrigerator or adding ice once it was cool. So it seems that the glass is way too thin for this type of item. It reminded me of the class from a wine glass or so, which would be not suitable for this type of jar, in my humble opinion. I am looking for a stronger jar for my tea at the moment.

We love this! BUT, it broke after only a week of very careful use. We'd buy it again, if the glass was thicker. And we'd like it to be bigger. Great idea though, just needs improvement.
