Product Description

Color: Black

The BODUM Ibis water kettle boils 50 oz of water in about 4 minutes using a 1500 watt power heating element directly in contact with the water. That means the energy enters the water without getting lost heating up the metal body of your traditional kettle. With its oval shape, this handy cordless kettle is designed to have a permanent place at the kitchen counter using a minimum of space. Made of a heat-reinforced polypropylene plastic and a stainless steel heating element, it is an indispensable and practical everyday tool for cooking - and certainly when a fast boil is needed. The easy to read water level indicator shows in ounces and liters the amount ready to boil. Whether it is 10 oz or 50 oz the Bodum kettle will automatically cut off power after the water boils a short while. No more dry boils!By the way: Bodum has provided the Ibis with a special "scale filter" which reduces the amount of calcium in your water. With this filter your tea and coffee will become even more aromatic and tasteful. Do not fill above the MAX, market outside on the water level gauge and marked inside on the kettle body. Our electrics products come with a Manufacturer's two year limited warranty.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dear Bodum: It's been nice knowing you., November 18, 2009
    Dear Bodum,

It's been nice knowing you. This is the last of your products I own and the last I will ever own. Your IBIS Electric kettle looked great and worked great for a couple years and then it started having these 'intermittent' connection issues which other reviewers have pointed out. It also has some evidence of melting plastic around said connection. As it currently stands I am sliding a spoon between the base and the front bottom edge of the kettle in order to force the connection. I don't anticipate this solution to be lasting, so here I am at Amazon in search of a replacement.

First it was the GRANOS espresso machine that quit over electrical problems and crazy amounts of water leaking from who knows where. Next it was the lipstick vacuum thermos that I got for Christmas one year--it leaked almost from day one and your customer service refused to replace it. Eventually the metal screen on my french press gave way (out-built and out-performed by an off brand press that is still kicking it) and now the IBIS.

Is this really how you want it to be? Known for good design and poor follow through? All bark and no bite? The thing is, your products look great and I truly do want to be friends but it's complicated. We can't go on like this. Please let me know if you change your mind in favor of building something lasting and honest.

    Regretfully,
    Ryan

Update 11/18/09: I sent a similar letter to Bodum customer service, and just received the following customer service reply.

    "Hi, Ryan

1.0 out of 5 stars NIce looks, bad quality, September 18, 2010
We have bought this kettle from Bodum when our smaller one stopped working (after a long life). We like the design and looks of it, but the plastic they use does not provide the quality needed. The one that my husband has in the office standing on the windowsill cracks and brakes (presumably because of the sunlight). The one at home has lost the contact between the base and the kettle about 2 months after purchase. The cheap an inadequate plastic, in which the connecting prongs are set on the bottom of the kettle, deforms from the heat and there is no way to have it connect properly without either holding the kettle while it operates, or making some other kind of an arrangement.
That is the last electric product from Bodum for us.

This item worked fine for a few months, then the base started to overheat, getting worse after each use until finally the plastic started melting.

Bodum used to be reputable and now, like all others, their products are made in China. Chinese products fills up US landfills. Appliances used to last 20, 30+ years, now about 2 years. I'd gladly pay $200 for a small appliance that would last but none exist anymore.

Don't waste your money on this dangerous item. You're better off buying a $14 electric kettle.
