These glasses are double-walled blown glass. The air space between the layers of borosilicate glass keeps the temperature of the drink from contacting your hand. So hot drinks inside stay hot, but the surface is room temperature; the same applies to a chilled beer or an iced tea. We like to drink hot tea from these glasses. Tea seems to taste better out of a glass and you can admire the amber color as you drink your beverage. Borosilicate glass is like laboratory glass; can be blown thin but it is relatively strong.

A couple of things: for one, these glasses do not go in the dishwasher. They are a bit fragile and more importantly, the heat of the dishwasher can sometimes cause expansion which for a glass of this type can lead to breakage. Better to wash these carefully by hand. Which brings me to my next point; they are rounded and slightly larger than my grip, which is fairly good-sized for a woman. So if you have small hands, this can be slippery when you are washing them in the sink.

I like double-walled glasses so I don't think this is a huge detriment, but you do have to be careful. The insulation factor is pleasant for hot and cold drinks, so it's worth washing these by hand.

I first saw this brand for sale at Starbucks. Useful for coffee, milk, juice, beer, chilled wine, highballs, etc. They keep hot drinks hot yet cool to the touch, and cold drinks cold without sweating and ruining tabletops. I _love_ them, and they are already great favorites around the house. Maybe too great...
Already two of these elegant glasses have broken, one en route to my home (which the seller immediately replaced) and one in my sink. However, if you remember that these are hand-blown glass and treat them as carefully as a wine glass, they should be plenty durable. They are perfectly dishwasher safe--I just need to train my family not to toss them in the sink.

I was given a set of these glasses as a Christmas gift in 2009. One year later, I have one glass left.

They didn't break in the usual way. These glasses have a small glass plug in the base that seals the vacuum between the layers. Some of these plugs broke because they touched whatever surface you place the glass on before the bottom of the glass did. Others popped in the dishwasher. Others just broke for no noticeable reason. But the bottom line is that I have one glass remaining that is still sealed, and the rest have a hole in the bottom that lets water and grime into the area between the inner and outer surface.

I did like them a lot while they were functional. You could put a cold beverage in them on a humid day and the glass wouldn't sweat or make your hand cold, and they do a reasonably good job at keeping cold beverages cold.

I have a set of these glasses. I love them. They work well, i.e., they keep hot liquids hotter longer and cold ones colder longer. I also treat them with the delicacy that they deserve. As others have mentioned, they're very fragile - as fragile as fine wine glasses - and ideally should be hand-washed. You'll also not want to set them under an ice dispenser, as the rims are easily cracked, and you'll want to use a spoon in them with care.
Another different yet equally important issue, though, is that shipping these glasses can be tricky, as I learned the hard way when attempting to ship a set to family. I am assuming that the temperature extremes caused them, because of the layer of air trapped in between that serves as the insulator, to shatter during shipment. The two well-packed and protected boxes that they arrived in were intact, but the glasses themselves were in tiny pieces.
Again, this is just an assumption based on deduction, but I'd be willing to bet that it was a shipping temperature issue. I will attempt to contact Bodum to learn whether they've had complaints about this.
Bottom line: buy them for yourself, and if they're a gift have them shipped locally only. MN to WA in December = disaster.

Keeps your drink hot and your hands cool, or vice-versa, no coasters required! We have both the smaller 9 oz version and recently bought this set. We have had the smaller ones for a number of years and they have only broken when they were dropped, or had something dropped on them. None of the larger ones have broke yet. They are fragile, but not excessively so. If you are reasonably carful you can expect to have them around for a while (in my experience). From the other reviews I am guessing that not all the glasses are equally sturdy (they are hand made) making some break very easily and others last a long time.

Does exactly what it is supposed to do... Keeps hot stuff hot and cold stuff cold.
Unfortunately arrived with 2 broken glasses in box.

These glasses are very nice and the insulation keeps the condensation off. They have a plastic plug in the bottom but I but do recommend these glasses, if you are willing to hand wash them. I made the mistake of putting a couple in the dishwasher, only afterward to discover that water had gotten between the two sections - I cannot remove the water, even after removing the plastic plug in the bottom and heating them in the microwave - any suggestions?

I bought these as a gift to family with home made cocoa and liquid carmel mixes. What a hit! My Mom reports using it for her morning coffee and she hasn't "nuked" her cup to warm it up since! I love the unique beauty and the function. Cold drinks stay cold and the glass does not "sweat". Hot drinks stay hot longer and warm much longer. Love all the styles.

If you read my review of Bodum Pavina 12-Ounce Double Wall Thermo Tumbler Glass, Buy 4 Get 6 Bonus Set you will find that I like them very much. The only problem with the set I'm reviewing here is that it's practically identical to the set I mentioned. The other set even comes in the same box, but it has an additional sticker on it that says "Get 6! Pay for only 4." It also cost about 2/3 of the price of this set. So get the newer set if you can.

Over time, they will probably change the box for the other set to have USW tacked onto the product number. But you will still get the same contents. Right now, they are literally using the same box with the same product, only adding a sticker and offering it for less money.

Prices fluctuate, so I'd suggest checking the prices of both items before deciding which one to get. If these become available at a close out price, they may be a better deal after all. Or if they stop offering the other set, consider the price of this set. It's five star glassware, but only if the other set stops being sold.

Attractive and functional at a great price, I own these glasses. We are replacing all other glasses with preference to using these. I am now gifting to others after much admiration. Good for hot or cold beverages; and dishwasher safe.
