This model is also quite a bit better at retaining heat than the plastic version. It's almost too good at it in fact. I find myself unscrewing the lid just to get the coffee down to drinkable levels. once it's at ideal temp it will stay there for hours if you happen to be a slow coffee drinker. If you want some coffee more immediately then you had best be a good judge of water temperature when you but the kettle on.
The only thing i miss about my old plastic one was it's transparency. there was never any question if i had added too much water or if the coffee was done. I could see it quite easily. But if that's all i have to give up for longevity then so be it. I imagine it would be hard to add cream or sugar as well but i drink mine black so that is a nonissue.
If you want quality fresh black coffee or loose leaf tea on the go without the cost or waste of a coffee shop then look no further. Convenient, sturdy and environmentally friendly, that's this press/mug combo
If the filter did go to the bottom when this thing was empty, you wouldn't be able push down the press the whole way when you had coffee grinds in there! This would leave a spot where the press handle sticks out, also leaving a gap where liquid and heat can escape. Pushing the handle down closes this gap!
Basically I think the mug is perfect. The seal is awesome, I haven't had any leaking. It keeps it hot for at least 2 hours. The press handle is the perfect size.
I like the concept of combining things to get a better product. I am referring to the combination of the French press and an insulating coffee mug. When I was first introduced to the French press, I was skeptical because it was different. After trying it, I loved it because the coffee itself taste better than what I was drinking before. Once making coffee in the French press, i would then pour it to the insulated coffee mug, which keeps it warmer than a standard coffee mug of yore. It got tiresome and seemed like a chore to make, drink, and clean. I hated the wait and the mess. Now Bodum has combined the two (French press and insulated coffee mug) and I am ecstatic with it.
I like this product because of the following:
* It is convenient. There are two tools in one to make a great cup of Joe!
* It's very sexy. The one I ordered (due to availability) is the white colored mug.
* Clean up looks easy enough. What? Just finish drinking and rinse out the grounds. I prefer only having to wash one tool rather than two.
* The mug is insulated. This is to keep the drink either colder or hotter for longer periods of time. Great for morning coffee. The cheap cups at work will only keep the coffee hot for a few minutes.
* The size. If we were to use 8 ounces of coffee as a standard unit per cup, then it's almost 2 cups of coffee.
As you've might notice I gave it 4 out of 5 stars. I am going to be nit-picky on the following cons. They are as follows:
* The cost. It costs more than standard insulated coffee tumblers/mugs or whatever you call them.
* Non-slip feature.Read more ›
Making coffee is a snap. Dump in a couple scoops of COARSE grounds, pour hot water in, stir and screw the lid on. Let it sit for 5 minutes and then depress the plunger. You can pour cream/sugar in through the drink spout after you attach the lid if desired. Do not remove the lid after plunging to add things unless you like chewing your coffee. I just swirl it around with the lid closed to mix it up. Cleaning is easy even in a hotel bathroom sink. Just like the regular Bodum presses, you can unscrew the mesh filter for easy rinsing.
TIP: Make sure the filter screen is screwed on to the plunger tightly before pressing the coffee. The filter can unscrew while screwing the lid on. I had it detach once and it was not easy to get out of the mug (and you will definitely waste a cup of coffee). As long as the screen is checked before you put the lid on you will not have any problems.
