3.0 out of 5 stars espresso?
gee, this seems more like a coffee maker than an espresso maker: the holes in the metal filter hardly seem small enough for espresso grind, and the water capacity (two cups) seems appropriate for coffee rather than espresso.

If you're like me, you love espresso and if you're a lot like me, you loved iced espresso. If you don't need a milk frother, then this is for you.

I've been brewing espresso for 7 years now and prefer a few things: good beans and a good brewer. This brewer is a no-frills, no baloney add-on features product that simply does espresso. It acts as a small percolator but is better than some of the espresso range-top devices I've seen. Why? Because the really cheap ones are made of aluminium and leaves a taste in the coffee. Geh!

So when I saw this I was stoked. It's made of stainless steel and polycarbonite for the top. I love glass, but sometimes plastic is alright as well. Simply put the espresso in the bottom with the cold water, screw on the top, place on electric plug-in pad and presto. In four minutes, bubbling hot espresso brews to the top and into the enclosed container. Best part of this little machine? NO MESS! If you've brewed espresso, you know that it splashes, it leaks and runs and can be a pain to clean up after especially if you have lighter colored countertops. This is no mess.

It also automatically shuts off when all of the hot water is brewed through. Great machine, no doubt.

Only complaint: the electrical cord is very short so it needs to be right next to an outlet. That's the unfortunate part. However, the machine is not attached to the electrical pad and when you lift it off the pad, it shuts off automatically.

Great machine for just brewing espresso. That's it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Divine Espresso, March 16, 2006

This little espresso maker makes wonderful espresso. Very smooth and no trace of acidity. I use the coffee from Pete's. It's compact and easy to use. There is like only 6 parts to the whole thing: plastic top, plastic ring, metal ground cover, metal ground holder, metal water holder, power cord with base. The cord looks really short when I first took it out of the box. It turned out it was wound one time under the base. After I unwound it, it is about 2.5ft long.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bodum Mocca Electric Coffee Maker, March 13, 2011
This review is from: Bodum Mocca Cordless Electric Espreso Maker -1176
I feel compelling to write a review on this unit and I don't usually do that, but due to some negative reviews of this, I need to do so. I own 3 similar makers, this one, the DeLonghi Alicia and the Bodum non-electric, all with same principle, which is to use boiled steam to make coffee. Among these three, this one is the best one. It makes great coffee with the least amount of efforts. The Delonghi is not bad, just not tasting as good ( I'm using it in my office), this one is at home. The non-electric one also makes better tasting coffee than the Delonghi, however, it is a little more cumbersome to use and also not consistently working.

Bottom line, this one is a beautiful engineering machine, made in Germany, everything about it exudes quality and works every time with steaming hot coffee (despite what was said by one of the reviewers). The only time when it does not make hot coffee is when you put in warm/hot water or without cooling it down first before putting in water. I recommend it highly.

It works OK. you need to pay attention when it's done, because it cools quickly. It's quick and easy, and fairly convenient, especially when you find that extra wind of cord under the base. Is it worth the price? no. I got mine for $50 and think I paid $25 too much.

1.0 out of 5 stars Breaks easily, August 6, 2007

Makes average coffee. Also the stem inside the upper clear plastic part broke on mine. And its not covered under warranty because the warranty only covers electrical faults, and they wont even sell the upper clear part as a separate replacement part. My only option is to buy a whole new machine, which is definitely not going to happen.

1.0 out of 5 stars Acrylic top cracks within 1 month of use, April 2, 2011
This review is from: Bodum Mocca Cordless Electric Espreso Maker -1176
I wanted a stainless steel espresso maker to use every day. I was thrilled when I found this one: very nice design, easy to use, I could leave it unattended as it turns off when the coffee is done, and is easy to wash. I bought this as a Christmas present for myself in Dec 2010. It is now March 2011, 3 months in, and my husband refuses to drink the coffee. He says when he washes the top acrylic part, small pieces are breaking off. I noticed the cracks within a month of use. Apparently, the top part does not tolerate the temperature the coffee reaches. The machine works wonderfully well and I love that - but the top part is just not holding up! I did not purchase this on amazon, but still feel the price is too high for a product with such a short useful life.

2.0 out of 5 stars From ecstatic to disappointed in a few short months., September 26, 2011
This review is from: Bodum Mocca Cordless Electric Espreso Maker -1176
Like another person who has reviewed this product, I found mine at TJ Maxx. About a month after purchasing it, I noticed tiny cracks near the air vents on the upper plastic body. I was never harsh or rough in my handling or cleaning of the product and followed all of the instructions and precautions. It has steadily produced more cracks over the last few months and today it completely shattered while I was rinsing it out. The temperature is just too high for this plastic. I am searching for another electric moka as I love the flavor and like to have it at my desk at work but I will definitely be getting an all metal pot instead of the clear plastic top. So far I have been unsuccessful at finding replacement parts from Bodum and after reading other reviews it looks like the warranty won't help either.

1.0 out of 5 stars carafe breaks and no replacement parts available, June 23, 2011
This review is from: Bodum Mocca Cordless Electric Espreso Maker -1176
This worked well until the top carafe began to crack. Now it leaks and I have looked all over the internet and at Bodum USA - there are NO replacement carafes!!! What a rip-off.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ka-BOOM!, June 21, 2011

I love this little espresso maker, BUT, mine didn't come with the stainless plate inside. For some reason it brewed up a bout five cups perfect, then it started hissing when the coffee grounds blocked the percolating shaft. I went to check on it and it exploded, shooting coffee grounds 15 feet away and 8 feet high on the wall. It covered about 200 square feet with grounds. I'm very lucky the lid was open away from me or I'd have been badly scalded in the face. I'm sure if I had the part, it would work ok, I bought it at TJ Maxx. When I called Bodum, they said they havent sold this model for 5 years and had no parts to it. Be careful if you buy this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Espresso, works great, worried about lifetime length, June 10, 2011
This review is from: Bodum Mocca Cordless Electric Espreso Maker -1176
I have had this for several months, I love it so much I now pack it up and take it with me when I go out of town for more than a day or two. It is very simply, you can even set it up at night and hit the on button in the morning if you want to set it up early; though this is not necessary because it only takes two seconds to set up. I love how smooth tasting the coffee comes out- even bitter Starbucks espresso grounds taste good compared to normal when brewed in here though I prefer local market coffee or imports from Germany or Italy. The top does seem like it could come off easily if not taken care of but it wouldn't really matter if it did anyway, it wouldn't affect the ability to brew. I love that this one is see through so you really can see how full it is before trying to pour, I also love the on/off that automatically changes to off when it is completed. A few times, usually when I don't fill the grounds all the way, I notice some make it into the bottom of the pot due to the fine grinds I use but unless you tip the pot to get more than the last drip out they never make it to my glass.
Additionally, another person commented on the stem breaking so I have been cautious about cleaning it aggressively and just run soapy water through it and occasionally, depending on use, I will wipe it out with a q-tip to give it a good through cleaning. I wouldn't have even mentioned those things but they sound like a deterrent to some, but I love it so much I wanted to let you know as long as you aren't rough cleaning it that those won't apply to you and you will get more than your store-bought coffee's worth of money out of it to pay for itself 100x over and the taste is better so I highly recommend the product but gave it 4 stars just because of those potential issues. Enjoy!
