Amazon.com Review

Combining modern materials and clever styling, Bodum's Assam drinkware brings a truly innovative look to the table. The walls of each vessel are actually two layers of clear glass, creating an optical illusion that the liquid is suspended within. Highlighting the dramatic effect, the Assam shape features slightly concave sides that flare out as they reach the smooth, round rim.

This set of two double old fashioned/tumbler glasses serves Cape Cods or Irish coffee with equal ease. Crafted of borosilicate glass, which is also used to make scientific lab equipment, the pair is exceptionally strong, lightweight, and thermal. The two-layer construction also resists heat and prevents condensation, so no matter what temperature the beverage is, the glasses remain comfortable to hold and safe for any tabletop. Winner of the prestigious European IF Design Award, this 7-ounce, scratch-resistant set goes safely into the dishwasher and microwave. Mix and match Assam with the Pavina and Canteen lines for a variety of fun shapes. --Kara Karll

Editor's Note: Because the glasses are mouth blown, each one may have slight variations in height, thickness, and weight. Bodum recommends using care when placing ice into the glass to avoid fracturing the inner layer. Do not use metal spoons or place the glass into a crowded dishwasher.

Product Description

The Bodum Assam double wall tea glass is 6.5 ounces in size and can be used for cold or warm beverages. Its unique design is appealing to the eye when filled with your favorite beverage. With its double layer of borosilicate glass it appears as though the liquid is 'floating' within the glass. They will not sweat when filled with a cold beverage, so you will not have to use a coaster. The double wall creates a thermal effect, helping to keep your cold drinks cold and your hot drinks hot for longer periods of time. These mouth blown glasses are an exciting product for any home, restaurant, and cafe and are a definite conversation piece. Bodum’s insulated glassware is made from durable Borosilicate glass. Borosilicate glass is a strong heat-resistant glass traditionally used to make scientific lab glass. Stronger than traditional “soda-lime” glass, borosilicate can be used for everything from drinkware to cookware. Borosilicate glass substitutes boron oxide in place of the soda and lime used in everyday glassware. The boron oxide acts as the glue holding the silicate together. Due to small size of boron particles, the glass is held together tighter, resulting in a stronger, lighter glass. Borosilicate glass doesn’t need to be as thick as traditional glass to be just as strong due to the bonding capability boron oxide. Borosilicate is simply a different type of glass that is resistant to temperature swings and scratching. Because the particles are held together so tightly, borosilicate glass is resistant to temperature swings, In addition to being dishwasher safe borosilicate will not become cloudy over time; you can rest assured that after 1,000 cycles, the glass will be as clear as the day you bought it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice, September 12, 2007
This review is from: Bodum Thermo-Glass Assam Double Wall Thermo-Glasses , Set of 2 (Kitchen)
I have to give this cup full marks for esthetics and function.

1) They are very good looking cups and a nice conversation piece. I like the shape of them and the glass is just so sparkling clean and clear.

2) Functionally, they do work nicely as I can hold on to a very hot cup of tea without burning my hands. However, I believe the opening of the cup is too wide to really keep the contents cool or hot for a very long time. But since the cup is only 7oz's, I usually finish the contents before they get to room temperature.

Conclusion: I'd get them just for the looks, if nothing else, they're so cute.

6 month update: The glass has unfortunately browned up a little. I don't know if it's because I'm not scrubbing my cup hard enough or because the glass naturally takes the tea stain. But on the other hand, I don't want to scrub too hard so that it scratches the glass. Either way, my glasses are no longer as bright and clean as before.

2 1/2 year update: I've read many other Bodum cup reviews and it appears that many of the reviewers are saying that their cups are fragile. From what I see, it seems that only the ones with handles are fragile. Maybe it's due to the complexity of having a handle? Knocking on wood, so far, my cups have survived 2 1/2 years of daily use. Even more, I drink tea with them and I pour boiling water out of the kettle right into the cup. I mostly hand wash them and put them in the dishwasher about once a month. They still work very well. I find that they do keep hot liquids hotter than regular cups. I still love them and still recommend them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for tea, February 4, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Bodum Thermo-Glass Assam Double Wall Thermo-Glasses , Set of 2 (Kitchen)
I bought two of the "canteen" model glasses at Crate and Barrel, liked them and decided to buy more. When I saw the Assam glass, I thought it was likely to be much more comfortable for people with small hands to hold. I bought six of them for myself, and have also given them as gifts. Everyone does seem to like them. I particularly enjoy them for hot tea. Because of the double wall, they seem to have a small capacity for their size. I am sure that they are less sturdy than heavier glass, but so far I have not had any breakage--but I have an all-adult household. They would not be my first choice if they were to be my only, everyday, all-purpose glasses. But if one has room for some extra, special use glasses, these are very nice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful for tea, May 6, 2007
This review is from: Bodum Thermo-Glass Assam Double Wall Thermo-Glasses , Set of 2 (Kitchen)
I am an avid tea drinker who loves the tactile feel of glass. The problem is that most of the decorative tea glasses I have seen are heavy and un-insulated. The lack of insulation makes it difficult to hold your tea without burning your hands. These fit the bill perfectly. They are a pleasure to look at and to hold. The slight taper falls perfectly in the hand. One warning, these are delicate and composed of very thin walled glass and must be handled accordingly. I would not recommend placing these in the dishwasher or for households with small children
