backroller,
By Margo Montage (Boston) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Body Back Company Back Roller (Health and Beauty)
I have owned a MAROLLER in the past and wanted a new roller. This is not as good as the "official" MAROLLER. It is lighter and not nearly as effective. I wish I had held out for the genuine article.

Melts tension away,

You should NOT use this if you have any spine injuries. The roller is made of wood, though it's not one solid piece, which was somewhat disappointing. The rubber rings on each end do a good job of keeping it from sliding around as you roll on it.
I work at a computer all day long and have problems with tightness in my neck and back almost constantly, in spite of daily workouts. I got the back roller a couple of weeks ago and have used it a half dozen times since then. It comes with a four-page write-up that's completely useless and reads like it's been written by a non-native English speaker on drugs. To use the back roller, you put in on a hard surface and lie down so that your neck falls in the groove between the two bumps. You then bend your knees, put your hands behind your head and gently push upward with your feet so that the roller rolls a little farther down your neck. You stop as soon as you feel any tension and stay there for a couple of minutes and repeat until you get down to your lower back, making sure your spine stays in the groove the entire time. The point is not really to roll but rather to let the bumps press into the erector muscles and relax away any knots. It works great and definitely helps relieve tension in the rhomboid muscles, which is a huge problem for me and usually for anyone who spends their day sitting in front of a computer. The first time I use it (I usually do two or three runs-through from neck to lower back), it hurts A LOT but I definitely feel better afterwards and it works the knots out better than the Shiatsu massager I have. Overall, I think this is a must-have is you have back pain, though it only really helps if the pain is muscle strain and it works better on the upper and middle back than the lower back because of the way the spine curves.

The best thing ever!,
By Tiny Yogini (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews

Okay, maybe that's stretching it (no pun intended), but I really do love this massager. I practice yoga and exercise regularly, but still hold stress in my upper back and neck. I've suffered chronic muscle tightness in those areas for about 10 years.
I bought this item while suffering from a back muscle spasm. I didn't want to go the medication route, so I used this every day for about 30 minutes, along with yoga. It really made a difference. It gets deep into the erector muscles and cuts through tension like butter. For chronic tightness, you'll have to use this regularly, as your muscles will want to tighten again after treatment (just like after massage). But you know what? You're worth the time required to spend on your health. :) Namaste

I love this product. It's perfect for rolling down the back to get to some great pressure points. It's not to be used as a light roller, as the weight of your body is against it, but it really gets some of those tight muscles to relax and let go.

Good for muscle tightness,
This review is from: Body Back Company Back Roller (Health and Beauty)
This is a deep tissue [self] massage tool. You place it on a hard surface and then lay on it with your spine lined up with the groove. Bend your knees and put your feet flat on the floor, then slowly roll on the tool until you find an area of tension; stop there for a good 10 breaths or until you feel the tension release. The bumps are designed to press up into the muscle to relieve the tension. If your muscles are really tight, it will probably hurt at first.
If you don't like deep tissue massages or have trouble handling the pain involved with one, then this item is not for you. Also, if you have any neck/spine issues more serious than muscle strains or "knots" then I wouldn't use this item without speaking to your doctor first. Otherwise, it is great for relieving tension in the erector muscles of the spine. I really like mine. The only drawback is that I find it doesn't work as well for the low back (above the tail bone area) as it does for the rest of the back -- mainly because of the natural curve of the spine.

The MA Roller is a must have for anyone that works in an environment where they have to sit for 8+ hours a day. 4 minutes a night on this thing and it will really help with any tension that you carry in your back. BUY IT, YOU'LL LIKE IT!

Wonderful for the Erector Spinae (vertical back) muscles,

This review is from: Body Back Company Back Roller (Health and Beauty)
This back roller is my new favorite thing! I exercise (cardio and weights), I stretch, I see a chiropractor regularly, and I get a therapeutic massage every two months. Unfortunately, I also work in a chair 6-8 hours a day, after a long driving commute. This means a very tight back and hip area. I purchased this to supplement my exercise and stretching routine. I also have very tight lower back muscles (natural default, unfortunately); keeping them flexible and stretched out is my solution to no back pain. I use my back roller for about 5 minutes, 2-3 times a day, depending on how tense I am feeling. I start with my middle back. I support myself according to the directions, and relax into the prongs. I hold myself there for 3 deep, slow breaths, then move the roller down, rinse and repeat. I hold the pressure for 5 breaths when I get to my lower back, and I use it safely all the way down to my SI joints (the dimples in the back of the hips). Then, I reverse the process, and work back up to my middle back. After my time with my back roller, I feel amazing. My entire body feels looser, and more balanced. My hip and leg muscles relax, and my lower back allows itself to unclench. Because of these results, I have started using it before and after a workout session; I have noticed improved results, both in performance and post-workout recovery, in just two sessions! If it seems too good to be true, just remember -- the muscles on either side of the spine support your entire human body in a vertical position, all day long. This back roller provides direct pressure, just like a masseuse would, and makes it very simple to self-massage areas of the body that are normally difficult to access. It does take some getting used to, and it's crucial to read the directions carefully and proceed as far as your body is comfortable with. With proper use, this tool can become invaluable - it certainly is for me! I am already looking for a more compact version to bring with me to work.

I wouldn't call it a miracle cure for back problems, but it does keep my back in decent shape with fewer visits to the chiropractor for adjusting, which is what I was hoping it would do. It definitely loosens things up. Does take a bit of getting used to. Overall, I am happy with the purchase.

Best massage tool,

I own many massage tools and this has become my favorite. It wooks very well for the spine, neck, legs, and shoulders. The shape allows you to really get deep into the muscles. It can be used by yourself on yourself easily, and works great on others. It is also very well made!
