Book Description

1426201281 978-1426201288 October 16, 2007 1
Ideal for families, students, and anyone who's interested in maintaining good health, Body engagingly reveals the complex and fascinating systems of the human machine;from head to toe, cells to skin, inner workings to outward appearance.

Organized by body system, the chapters offer a balanced combination of basic anatomical and physiological information. Noted science writers Lisa Stein, Trisha Gura, and Patricia Daniels provide descriptions that are clear, accurate, and accessible to readers on every level. Colorful diagrams, amazing photographs, and miraculous 3- and 4-dimensional imagery;generated by cutting-edge tools;complement the text. The drawings of visionaries such as Leonardo Da Vinci illustrate historic advances in medical science.

Special-topic sidebars address today's most relevant concerns: Keeping Healthy, What Can Go Wrong, Medical Breakthroughs, and more. Fact boxes feature eye-catching items that appeal to readers' curiosity: how Botox works, what "blue blood" means, why Joe Namath's knees are famous.

For easy reference, each chapter includes its own glossary of terms. Valuable cross-referencing tools guide readers to related information throughout. An appendix offers a full glossary, timeline of medical discoveries, and biographies of key pioneers in the field.

Enhancing this book's authority are a foreword by acclaimed neurologist Richard Restak, bestselling author of 18 books on the brain; and the guidance of advisers from prestigious medical establishments.

Comprehensive, reliable, impeccably researched, and a pleasure to read, Body is the essential health resource for every home and library.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Long known for stunning photography and quality prose, the National Geographic Society brings those qualities to bear on this enthralling exploration of the human body. In 13 chapters (and an epilogue on the future of human development), each physical system-"body armor," "structure," "messengers," "reproduction," etc.-is explained in clear text and full-color images. Photographs are sensational, many the result of improvements in microscopic photography developed over the past decade; likely the first time many readers have seen their inner workings in such detail, stunners include a photograph of an actual cancer cell with three T-lymphocytes attached to it. Topics are well-organized and illustrations impeccable; in addition, sidebars cover important figures and developments such as pioneering heart surgeon Dr. Michael DeBakey; "what can go wrong," including closer looks at diabetes and Alzheimer's; and tangential concerns like hiccups, circumcision and nose jobs. In addition, each info-packed chapter includes a useful glossary of terms, making this guide an accessible and highly informative reference for all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic reference for students and adults, October 29, 2007
This review is from: Body: The Complete Human (Hardcover)
I recently ordered the deluxe version of this book directly from National Geographic.

The text is straight forward and easy to understand. The book is laid out with an excellent structure. The photographs are fantastic and illustrate the concepts extremely well.

I teach middle school science at a private school and am delighted to show the book to my students. A word of warning, though: the section on reproduction has a very explicit (yet wonderful) CT scan picture of a man and woman joined in the act itself. The anatomy is easily identifiable. I have gotten individual permission from my students' parents to allow them to leaf through the pages, in case they come across this one picture. You may or may not feel comfortable with children seeing it.

It's a well made, well written, well photographed book and addresses all the aspects of the human body, including the ethical issues that arise from different treatments. I cannot recommend it enough. Consider getting the hardback or leather bound edition because of the wear it will take.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing, December 29, 2007
This review is from: Body: The Complete Human (Hardcover)
I'm a Paramedic and I found this book by chance one day at my parents house (They are long term National Geographic subscribers and have a ton of their publications). I certainly wish I had this book while I was in school. The explanations, diagrams, figures and pictures are an excellent adjunct to learning Anatomy and Physiology. I found much of the information laid out in simple to understand tables that presented it in a direct, easy to read and remember. I found some of the information presented with more clarity than the text in my Paramedic instruction books.I would recommends this book to anyone, from lay people to medical professionals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Contemporary Medical Information, December 20, 2007

This review is from: Body: The Complete Human (Hardcover)
I would reccommend this book as a factual, current reference for anatomy and health issues. It is readable and understandable for the non-professional reader. In fairness, I advized the authors and publishers on the medical content for this volume, and would certainly be a biased reviewer.
