4.0 out of 5 stars A bit basic though nicely done
The book is very clear and readable, nicely organized and well-illustrated. However, the material covered is very basic (e.g., legs crossed, common signs of boredom and irritation, common courting signals, personal space, etc.) If you are looking for something basic, though, this is strongly recommended for its clarity (including wonderful illustrations and pictures) and...

The plus: Lots of good photos.
The negatives: The photos of the gestures don't need explaining.

You'll learn astonishing body language signs like
(1): If someone raises their arm, they are greeting you.
(2): When someone is surprised, their eyebrows raise, their eyes widen, and they make an 'O' mouth.
(3): When someone is sad, the corners of their mouth move down. When happy, the corners go up.
(4): If a man drapes his leg over a chair, it means he's indifferent to your opinion.
(5): If a woman smiles at a man and then lowers her head, leans towards him, and strokes her leg, it means she's interested in him.
(6): People often greet each other by extending arms and shaking the hand. But in some cultures, they hug.

You won't learn anything from this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars More about basic gestures than body language, January 4, 2009
This review is from: Body Language 101: The Ultimate Guide to Knowing When People Are Lying, How They Are Feeling, What They Are Thinking, and More (Paperback)
I purchased this book for insights primarily on telling when people are lying, to help identify opponents' unconscious "tells" in poker games. The book's subhead suggests such insights will be featured prominently. But the book instead is almost entirely about gestures, not body language. The reader is treated to such basic instruction as what people mean when they nod their head up and down ("I agree with you") or when they are twiddling their thumbs ("a gesture of boredom"). It might be useful for someone who has lived in total isolation his whole life. For the rest of us, it's not very helpful.

Poorest excuse for a supposedly "ultimate guide" that I ever saw. You should pay people to take it off your hands.

5.0 out of 5 stars Your mouth says "yes" but your body says "no"., September 17, 2010

This review is from: Body Language 101: The Ultimate Guide to Knowing When People Are Lying, How They Are Feeling, What They Are Thinking, and More (Paperback)
A well writen and nicely illustrated book on what the body is realling saying. When human talk to each other 93% in conveyed in body language while only 7% is speaking. In the day of computers, telephones, faxs, and video confrencing when important business decisions are made they are done in person. We still need interaction with people to get the real story. Knowing how to read people and seeing that their speaking dose not match their body language is something we take for granted but this book is excellent in making us aware of the real story. This is quickly becoming a paramount science for airport security, police, and countless dealings with dangerous people. If your knew to body language and facial expressions this is the best book to start with.

If you want a book that tells you an easy 101 ways to recognise tell-tale body language... this is the book. It does not cover all topics, but it does cover all the basics. I would recommend this as an introduction to body language. It is more a pictorial presentation then a written documentation, but it is beautifully written and illustrated.

I'm very satisfied with the quality of the books I received, also with the amount of time it took to get them. They were very cheap and in great condition. People could really learn a lot about a persons body language from reading this book. I think its great for therapist and students.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poorly Written, November 2, 2010
This review is from: Body Language 101: The Ultimate Guide to Knowing When People Are Lying, How They Are Feeling, What They Are Thinking, and More (Paperback)
I am fascinated with body language, so I ordered this book to help me out. I not only found that it was poorly written and not an enjoyable read, but that most of the things that were talked about for pages on end are common knowledge, even for someone who has never studied the subject. For example, it goes on for two chapters about how people in America do not like to have people in a radius of one foot to eighteen inches, unless they know them. So, if you see people that break that space, you can tell that they are not strangers. That is retarded! Anyone could tell you that without the slightest clue what they are talking about. This book was a huge let down and I have decided to find another book that can tell me something interesting about body language. With that said, don't waist your money on this book, look for a different one.
