A bargain for all that you get, July 3, 2006
This review is from: Body Language on the Job (Paperback)
Before reading this book, I knew only basic "common sense" details about nonverbal communication. I bought this book because it was inexpensive and had good reviews, so I thought I would give it a try. I also bought a few other titles -- including the similarly priced although prosaic Barron's business body language book. Looking back, I would have saved some money and only purchased this one and just checked out the other titles from the library.
Miller's Body Language on the Job is brimming with cleaver details, humorous illustrations and relatable anecdotes. I found its pithy, thoughtful formatting made it especially useful. The publisher clearly understood that this isn't the type of book that all busy professionals would have the time to sit down and read from cover to cover in one sitting. Each chapter is broken up into type-based sections. For example, if you're just interested in gestures, you can turn to page 34 and read all that you need to know. There was even a helpful index, list of practical guidelines, and quiz in the back -- all broken up by nonverbal communication areas.
The little things I learned to do (like rearranging my office so that I do not have my desk barricading the entryway to my office as this can inhibit interaction) were invaluable. For less than the cost of dry cleaning a couple dress shirts, you can read this book and gain so much more professionaly.

Excellent resource for improving workplace--and social--communications, March 20, 2006
This review is from: Body Language on the Job (Paperback)
Dr. Miller's latest book hits the spot when it comes to workplace communications. His presentation is fun to read, but the message he gets across is crucial for productive workplace relations. Too many times people focus on what they say, not on how they say it. Dr. Miller demonstrates through his examples and the illustrations in his book how managers and employees should pay more attention to the way their body language appears to others. I would recommend this book for all managers, as orientation material for new employees, and to any office that needs a boost in morale. I would also recommend this book to people before they interview for jobs. And, while this book was written for the workplace, it also applies to every situations, not only at work.
