A bargain for all that you get,
By Jack Del Real "Jack" (Illinois) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Body Language on the Job (Paperback)
Before reading this book, I knew only basic "common sense" details about nonverbal communication. I bought this book because it was inexpensive and had good reviews, so I thought I would give it a try. I also bought a few other titles -- including the similarly priced although prosaic Barron's business body language book. Looking back, I would have saved some money and only purchased this one and just checked out the other titles from the library.
Miller's Body Language on the Job is brimming with cleaver details, humorous illustrations and relatable anecdotes. I found its pithy, thoughtful formatting made it especially useful. The publisher clearly understood that this isn't the type of book that all busy professionals would have the time to sit down and read from cover to cover in one sitting. Each chapter is broken up into type-based sections. For example, if you're just interested in gestures, you can turn to page 34 and read all that you need to know. There was even a helpful index, list of practical guidelines, and quiz in the back -- all broken up by nonverbal communication areas. The little things I learned to do (like rearranging my office so that I do not have my desk barricading the entryway to my office as this can inhibit interaction) were invaluable. For less than the cost of dry cleaning a couple dress shirts, you can read this book and gain so much more professionaly.

Excellent resource for improving workplace--and social--communications,
By
This review is from: Body Language on the Job (Paperback)
Dr. Miller's latest book hits the spot when it comes to workplace communications. His presentation is fun to read, but the message he gets across is crucial for productive workplace relations. Too many times people focus on what they say, not on how they say it. Dr. Miller demonstrates through his examples and the illustrations in his book how managers and employees should pay more attention to the way their body language appears to others. I would recommend this book for all managers, as orientation material for new employees, and to any office that needs a boost in morale. I would also recommend this book to people before they interview for jobs. And, while this book was written for the workplace, it also applies to every situations, not only at work.

By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Body Language on the Job (Paperback)
Body Language on the Job by academician, administrator and business manager Patrick W. Miller is a lively and informative introduction to understanding the importance of "body language" and its particular implications for the work site. Acting as a "how-to" manual for a practical and informed reference to understanding and utilizing body language, Body Language on the Job educates its readers with over 75 detailed illustrations, 65 motivational quotations, 40 guidelines for supervisors, 60 review items with answers, and a great plethora of useful and helpful information. Body Language on the Job is very highly recommended reading for all businessmen, supervisors, and employees, as well as anyone interested in understanding of body language, verbal intonation, and the real message portrayed in communication as an exceptional reference for proper speech, etiquette, and mannerisms.

A Quick Read on an Important Topic,
By Melvin Toast "Arbiter" (Chicago) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Body Language on the Job (Paperback)
This book is like uranium. A small package that contains a dense field of material. Yet, unlike uranium, it will not harm you, and can only HELP you. I found it delightful that between the covers of a single, slim volume, I was able to find not only the basics of interpersonal communication skills across geographic and cultural divides, but chapter summaries that further condense and refine a goldmine of information. My foreign language students have benefited greatly from the insights of Body Language on the Job. Foreign students who seek employment in the United States need to know what is expected of them by potential employers. And Body Language on the Job delivers--for foreign students, and for anyone who is curious about what our bodies reveal about ourselves as we speak to one another.

By
This review is from: Body Language on the Job (Paperback)
They say a picture is worth a thousand words and this book only reinforces this phrase! The illustrations are great, making the book an easy and fun read.
I think anyone involved in meetings, presentations, or interviews of any kind would benefit from this book. The book is a must have for anyone in the business world. Those just starting a career to seasoned professional can make use of the information. Coverage includes gestures, use of space, dress, facial expressions, body movements, etc. I plan on making use of the information monitoring my own body language, as well as interpreting the body language of others. What a great tool!! The price makes it a great Stocking Stuffer for new college grads or those looking to enhance their careers. ENJOY!

great for office managers,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Body Language on the Job (Paperback)
This is a quick read. about 62 pages not including the test at the end that is filled with cartoons and side notes repeating the text. It goes into good detail with office lay out and how the environment impacts the worker. It also covers how to communicate to the people under you in the office. If your are in sales (as I am) I would pass the book by. There is very little in this book that will help you with one - on - one interaction with a client. Again, this book is great for office managers with LITTLE time to read - I had the whole book read in just over an hour thanks to the large text and cartoons. IF you are looking for help in sales go elsewhere.

Does what it advertises,

This review is from: Body Language on the Job (Paperback)
The book does cover differenty types of body language. I used it together with several other resources to put together a training program on customer service body language. If I could have used this book without referring to other resources, I would have rated 5 stars.

The book hs too many illustrations and the text covers very generic topics. I was able to obtain only 2 or 3 useful techniques from this book.
