Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Western medicine emphasizes treating disease, while traditional Chinese medicine is a healing art, focusing on getting a person's energy, spirit, and well-being in balance. In The Body Owner's Manual, acupuncturist Deborah DeGraff blends West and East with self-care skills that help you improve your health and quality of life. Illnesses, aches, and other physical symptoms are "distress signals" communicating a problem or imbalance. Listening to your body's signals will help you make changes that bring your mind and body into harmony.

Part I of The Body Owner's Manual presents an overview of the basics of Chinese medicine and self-care, including Qi (energy), diet, relaxation, strengthening the immune system, cleansing and detoxification, and emotional health. Part II is a self-care guide for healing specific ailments. If you're recovering from a physical injury, gentle massage helps release the emotional trauma, yoga balances the injured and uninjured sides, and acupuncture helps heal broken bones. Decrease chronic low-back pain by minimizing stress, caffeine, and sugar; strengthening your abdominal muscles; and eating black beans, walnuts, and warm foods. The ideas are clear and practical, with suggestions that can't help but improve your health and well-being. --Joan Price
