4.0 out of 5 stars A truly female detective
This book was a thrilling ride the whole way. The title suggests gore, and that suggestion was amply fulfilled. The thrills and bumps in the ride kept me guessing. But what I really appreciated was the character of the female protagonist. Too often, the "new" female detective is a hard-boiled, isolated, standard male detective in a skirt. But this one has...

1.0 out of 5 stars Complete letdown
This is one of the most disappointing books I've ever read; a cliched "silence of the lambs" knock-off where neither the criminal nor the motives are believable. The author creates numerous suspects, never fully developing any of them, and then out of thin air chooses one of them to be the villain. An attempt to make the main character interesting by giving her an...

4.0 out of 5 stars A truly female detective, March 8, 2004

This book was a thrilling ride the whole way. The title suggests gore, and that suggestion was amply fulfilled. The thrills and bumps in the ride kept me guessing. But what I really appreciated was the character of the female protagonist. Too often, the "new" female detective is a hard-boiled, isolated, standard male detective in a skirt. But this one has connections, relationships, and feelings that really suggest a woman. She doesn't really operate like a lone wolf, but someone who knows and cares about other people. This makes it a little harder to put her in the "final jeopardy" needed for the last chapter, but Stiefel pulled this off admirably. Quite a first effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compassion and horror, March 16, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Body Parts (Mass Market Paperback)
I have to admit I don't often read horror, but Tally Whyte is a compassionate, exuberant, and human protagonist who can take you through the pages and make you wait for the next book. I loved learning about the gritty world of a homicide grief counselor and I think it's one of the more unique professions I've come across in a mystery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Loved the Book!, July 14, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Body Parts (Mass Market Paperback)
My book club picked this novel because we thought the description of the title character was unusual. We read a lot of mysteries and thrillers. The book really lived up to expectations. I loved that it was a fast read, but I also found the characters very compelling. The book was clever and unusual, something we don't see all that much. We were all totally surprised by the ending. I can't wait for the next in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read!, July 2, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Body Parts (Mass Market Paperback)
I found this book in on a trip to Las Vegas. I'd never heard of the author, but I loved this book. It's a fast, exciting read, plus I loved the main character, Tally. She's a homicide counselor - a profession I had never heard of. I liked all the characters, including Penny, the Canine Corps dog. And the plot was excellent. I hope there's another Tally mystery coming! Great job!

I love mysteries and am always so happy to find a NEW writer that I enjoy. I pride myself on being able to guess the villan but Ms. Stiefel kept me guessing right up to the end. I agree that she may have presented more characters than necessary but I DO hope to meet some of these characters in her next books. Sure hope she keeps writing..I'll be watching for her next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Body Parts is a page turner, January 27, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Body Parts (Mass Market Paperback)
Vicki Stiefel spins a real thriller here. The story is full of sudden turns, startling events, shock, surprise, tension, danger. There's a totally unexpected explanation for everything that happens -- and it all fits together beautifully.I loved the Boston setting, I loved Tally, and I loved the writing. Five stars, at least.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book has it ALL!, March 28, 2004
This review is from: Body Parts (Mass Market Paperback)
I bought this book randomly having never heard of Vicki Stiefel. I simply liked the description and from the first page I could tell I was going to like "Body Parts".

For me, a great book has certain key elements:

1. Contiuous action/dialogue (I hate authors that describe every scene/person in overly minute detail)
2. Interesting characters with whitty & casual dialogue
3. A solid plot
4. A twist for an ending

This book has every one of those things. Just when you think you have this one figured out, you find you don't!...

I can't wait for the next book by Vicki and look forward to seeing more of Tally and her gang. If you like mystery and thrillers...grab this one! You won't be dissapointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Body Parts is awesome, February 18, 2004
This review is from: Body Parts (Mass Market Paperback)
I read this book in two scary nights. It's beautifully written, and I loved Tally Whyte, the heroine. She's got an unusual job. She counsels the families and friends of murder victims, so she encounters a lot of tragedy, a lot of intense emotion, and a lot of bad guys. The villain in this story -- I don't want to give away anything, but the book's title is apt -- is pretty scary. The novel is both mystery and thriller. Excellent!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast read. Stiefel does the job., July 28, 2004
This review is from: Body Parts (Mass Market Paperback)
Why did I like this book so much? It was a fast read and Stiefel knows her way around dialogue. On my wife's recommendation, I gave the book a shot. It got me from the first page. The plot was complicated enough to keep me interested, but not too crazy that it didn't make sense. This one is a keeper.
