To be fair, Suzanne mentions that this is not a how-to book, but I didn't realize how much she meant that! The book focuses on getting past the standard ears back/teeth bared/tail curved reading of body posture and encourages you to look for earlier, more subtle cues so you can help your dog head off an uncomfortable situation. I wish there was a pictorial section of some of the more subtle cues and more hands on information of how to correct body posture so the dog feels less threatened. One fantastic line from the book is "I'm surprised more dogs don't bite people"! It was a good, easy read and is very thought provoking.

A wonderfully written booklet that belongs in every dogs lovers library. Suzanne Clothier has a way of conveying her years of experience, observations, and thoughts in such a manner that you're looking for more once you've come to the last page. Whether the "average" pet owner or the experienced canine enthusiast, both will find it educational as well as easy to comprehend. Suzanne makes understanding our canine's emotions, behavior, and body language a facinating journey while providing us with the wisdom on how to improve our relationship with them.

Discusses how getting your dog to change his posture (body language) can change his behavior. Discusses why the thinking, "You can't let him get away with that!" can cause problems, rather than create a solution. Sections: the emotional animal; once upon a time there was a man in a shower; madness in our methods; elementary my dear watson; can't let him get away with what?; what you see is what you get; reactions -- fight or flee?; can't think straight; anatomy of an emotion; sorry I wasn't listening; shifting shapes shifting minds; offering options; conclusion. This book does tell you HOW to achieve what Suzanne is discussing; it is not just theory.
