Book Description

April 26, 1994
The Body in Recovery challenges the separation of verbal and bodywork therapies by integrating Reich's concepts of character armoring and bioenergetic exercises with psychodynamic theory. Addressed to therapists, this culminating work of twenty years of psychotherapy will also fascinate those embarking on the journey of therapy for themselves, and anyone seeking to understand the process of shaping an identity.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The Body in Recovery is immensely readable—it shows tremendous respect for the person."
-David Boadella, author of Reich: The Evolution of His Work

"Conger combines the work of Reich and bioenergetics with the insights of Melanie Klein, Winicott, Kohut, and especially Jung. This is a sensitive, practical book, useful for both patients and therapists."
-J. Marvin Speigelman, Jungian analyst

"The Body in Recovery is a landmark work. It presents a clear description of Reichian and bioenergetic concepts and techniques with psychoanalytic and Jungian theory. Conger's work shows a compassionate respect, even reverence, for the patient and the task of the therapist."
-Myron Sharaf, author of Fury on Earth: A Biography of Wilhelm Reich

5.0 out of 5 stars Recovery of the Left Out Part, November 6, 2001
By
Barbara F James (Atlantic Beach, Florida United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Body in Recovery: Somatic Psychotherapy and the Self (Paperback)
John Conger uses Jungian structure to help us honor, respect, and read the body for deeper core healing of the person. He clearly shows how our body is an arcive of information to give us the map to more and more freedom and meaning in our lives....The Body in Recovery is a map for the recovery of the TRUE SELF. Somantic signals have meaning and logic that can move us on the Individuation Process toward more and more meaning and purpose for our LIVES.

5.0 out of 5 stars much-needed theory for bodywork, February 8, 2001
By
"lohfu" (Daly City, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Body in Recovery: Somatic Psychotherapy and the Self (Paperback)
An extremely articulate and thoughtful work that provides a much-needed framework for understanding how psychotherapy emphasizing the body is (or can be) effective. There is still a paucity of meaningful theoretical writing on this theme. Excellent.
