5.0 out of 5 stars gaining a sense of self, October 27, 2010

This review is from: Body, Self, and Soul: Sustaining Integration (Paperback)
I read this book sometime in the 1990's while studying with Marjorie Rand one of the authors. Actually, Marjorie did this book as her PhD thesis although other authors are associated with this. This book proposes a methodology for gaining a sense of self in which one becomes integrated as a person. The concept is that as children, we do not get the kinds of messages (good parent messages) that we need to properly individuate and thus we fail to grow up as whole people. This is connected with how we come to hold our bodies and how we store our patterns in our bodies. This is a fundamental text for a therapy system called Integrative Body Psychotherapy. It is an excellent system that goes beyond talking head therapy and integrates neo Reichian work along with some talking head work. This book is filled with information that will enlighten the reader to their own patterns and the patterns of others. It is both instructive and informative. I recommend this book for anyone on the path to self discovery. And, it is especially good for anyone who is a parent.

The important feature of this book and the system that it describes is that it integrates the body and the mind/emotions. It is one of the earlier works in wholistic health in terms of psychotherapy. Marjorie writes from personal experience and from an academic point of view. I do not mean to slight the other authors, Jack is actually the founder of this methodology which he integrated from other systems. I personally met and studied with Marjorie so I especially appreciate her contribution to the text and her deep insights into human development. This book and the system it describes makes an important contribution to human growth and unfolding authentic spirituality and an integrated body mind.
