Book Description

May 15, 2000
In an American brought to its knees by worldwide economic collapse, militia uprisings and massive computer failures, what is a poor boy to do? If youre Graff Pauley, you collect organs and other body parts including heads for Edgerton. But when Pauley becomes another trophy on Edgertons wall, he realizes that the only way he can regain his freedom and a new body is to become enmeshed even deeper in Edgertons complex web.

The Body Shop is an original novelette that leads the anthology of horror fiction by the same name from Patrick Welch. Many of the stories have previously appeared in some of the Internets most prestigious publications and range from ancient Greece to the limits of outer space. If you like science fiction, dark fantasy, romance, sex, violence, mystery, cannibalism, voodoo or bubblegum music, you just might like The Body Shop.

Review

... a collection of interesting tales that are sure to enchant, engross and possibly, gross you out as well. -- Barry Hunter, Baryon

About the Author

Patrick Welch earned a BA and MA in English from Bowling Green State University. While in college he had short fiction published in several magazines including Analog. After graduation he concentrated on writing articles and advertising for Toledo-area publications while working a variety of jobs including teacher of the mentally retarded, musician, insurance salesman, store assistant manager and copywriter.

His winning an Internet short story contest four years ago convinced him to return again to short fiction. Since then he has sold over three dozen stories to Internet and small press magazines. His first novel, The Thirteenth Magician, was published last September by Dark Star Publications. Later this year, an anthology of sf and fantasy, Before/Beyond, and a fantasy novel, Westchester Station, will be published by Crossroads Publishing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Irreverent, humorous, and grotesque--very highly recommended, March 21, 2001
This review is from: The Body Shop (CD-ROM)
In the novella THE BODY SHOP, Patrick Welch challenges the imagination in post-Apocalyptic America. Graff Pauley desires to become a part of the Privileged rank, the only people who still enjoy wealth and peace. To make money, he supplies body parts to Edgerton, a modern-day Frankenstein.

A talking human head greets visitors to Edgerton's store. Most of the wares are for show anyway, as Edgerton makes his money selling body parts not selling his pawn goods. A medical school dropout, Edgerton achieves in miracles through voodoo.

An accidental meeting brings Pauley together with Violet Dreams, the woman who epitomizes the mindless, wealthy seeking entertainment in sex and drugs. Together, they become not Edgerton's victims, but his conquerors.

THE BODY SHOP anthology also includes twelve previously published and unpublished short stories. My favorite demonstrates just how invisible some of us have become in within our own society. Irreverent, humorous, and grotesque, Patrick Welch vividly and statistically comments on darkest fears and our darkest desires. Very highly recommended.
