Editorial Reviews

In his debut release, John Houghton displays a rare gift for blending the style of 1940s classic standard song with a contemporary lyric interpretation, hinting at Harry Connick Jr., Diana Krall and Nat King Cole. Houghton’s singing, combined with the masterful arrangements of Grammy nominated Larry Dunlap, bring to new life the songs of George and Ira Gershwin, Rogers and Hart, Antonio Carlos Jobim and others. Emphasis is on the subject of love which is inspired by a refined and pure vocal delivery that shines especially on ballads such as "Embraceable You" and Oscar Levant’s "Blame It On My Youth." A contrasting vocal delivery is heard on Jobim's "Corcovado" as Houghton sings in a meaningful, rich whisper-like tone. For those that like swing, Klenner’s "Just Friends" delivers a hopping swing and melodic improvisation. Houghton’s voice is ably supported by pianist Larry Dunlap, bassist Dan Feiszli, and world renowned drummer Akira Tana.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rising star, January 29, 2004
By
This review is from: Body And Soul (Audio CD)
John has a gorgeous voice, and the songs on this CD are an old-fashioned pleasure to listen to. If you like Harry Connick Jr., Peter Cincotti, or even John Raitt, check this guy out. It's pretty romantic stuff, but you'll love it even you're listening on your own. A must-have for jazz vocal fans who want to be on the cutting edge.

3.0 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor, January 26, 2007
This review is from: Body And Soul (Audio CD)
Although there are some graet standards on Johns CD, I should not have make the purchase. It was not what I thought it would be, my judgement was made from the audio sample, which by the way is the best cut. But that's my taste in music. Someone else might find Johns style and arrangements great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music to seduce your ears, May 31, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Body And Soul (Audio CD)
This is the music to set the tone for an quiet, intimate moment with someone special. Mr. Houghton's voice imparts all those quiet unspoken moments between two people. The arrangements are contemplative yet complex, and anyone familiar with the rich sounds of Harry Connick Jr. will appreciate the smooth stylistic flourishes that are to be found in this treasure.
