Honestly, it's a bit rediculous how much I like my new foam roller. As someone who works out regularly, I had gotten into the habit of taking two alieve several nights per week before bed as I just couldn't stand how bad my legs hurt from running. I tried stretching before and after and it just wasn't cutting it. That's when a trainer at our gym suggested I try the foam roller there. She said, "It's going to hurt, and I mean really hurt." As we got the roller out, I asked, "how do I know if I'm doing it right?" Her advice? You really can't get this wrong, just lay on it and roll back and forth where your muscles hurt. (If you need more direction, check out youtube.com as there are tons of videos on "How to use a foam roller"). After I used it, I noticed how immediately the muscles were losened up.

But for me personally, as I workout in the AM, by bedtime my legs had really started throbbing so I needed to find a foam roller that I could use at home. This particular model is WAY cheaper than any others listed on Amazon and I can tell you it's the exact same quality as what was at the gym.

Now, I use this darn thing nearly every night. I have cut back my consumption on Alieve by over 3/4 of what I was taking prior. For anyone who works out regularly, this is an absolute must.

I also bought "The Stick" and that has been a life-saver too as it's super easy to use while you're watching TV etc.

Good luck and hopefully this helps someone who wants to continue working out for the health benefits, but just can't stand how tight your muscles are.

I am an executive assistant, and spend a lot of time sitting in front of a computer, typing and what-not. This activity causes one's shoulders to bow forward, the muscles of the chest to contract and weaken, and the back muscles to stretch and likewise weaken. Two years ago, I tried to yank open a stuck window and tore the ligaments in my chest under the breast on the right side of my rib cage. I had to go to six months of physical therapy to fix this injury, and was told that my posture at my desk, shoulders bowed, caused this problem.

One of the exercises they had me doing was to lie down on a half-cylinder foam roll (exactly like the one I'm reviewing), aligning my spine along the roll (head on the roll/legs bent) for about ten or fifteen minutes or so. This would gently stretch the chest muscles as the rib cage relaxed on either side of the half-roll. Then, once the muscles were nicely stretched out, I'd do some arm and back muscle exercises using 2 lb weights (lift the weights, clench the back muscles, etc.)

It's been a year since I was in physical therapy, but I found the exercises so relaxing and so beneficial to my back and chest muscles that I immediately went out and purchased this half-cylinder foam roll and I've been lying on it every other night or so since then. I do exercises, too, but feel that just lying on the half foam roll, letting gravity help stretch my rib cage and chest muscles out, is the most beneficial part of owning one of these things. (I also joined a Y and do back exercises on the rowing machine there.)

I am skinny and weigh about 110. and after having this for 6 months, it is so crushed at my head end and tail end...there has got to be foam out there that can withstand the pressure longer than 6 months. I can't imagine if more weight were on it...

We were terribly disappointed with this roller. I ordered two - one for my husband and one for myself. First of all, the surface was not smooth as shown on the Amazon site but felt more like a compressed roll of bubble wrap. Secondly, we are not heavy people but when each of us put our weight in the center, the ends lifted off the floor about two inches and there was an immediate significant depression in the middle. And last but not least, when we returned the rolls we learned that the Amazon vendor would not pay for the shipping back to him, though I must say an Amazon Customer Service Rep was nice enough to give me a small credit on the shipping. Word of caution - not every vendor associated with Amazon will issue a Return Authorization label so you don't have to incur shipping charges when returning an item - be sure you inquire about that at time of ordering.

I'm an old man with back problems, ready to go under the knife to get relief, when a friend recommended a chiropractic office with a trainer that follows the chiropractor's "adjustments" with back therapy (read about Joe Montana's recovery from back surgery). The roller helps to massage the back (Laying the back across it and "walking" with the feet, rolling back and forth) and is also used for leg lift exercises that strengthen the back muscles. Using this and other exercises, I walked straight again (the first time in 30 years) within 3 weeks and removed all the heel lifts from my right shoe in four weeks. I'm almost pain-free, although the strenuous back exercises can introduce new pain. I'm working through this, and am back to my 3-mile morning walks.
