An unusual neurological condition resulted in pain that radiated from my shoulder area down to my fingertips. The occupational therapist recommended heat to help alleviate the discomfort. However, even though I'm short, I'm not so short that a standard heating pad would cover the entire area. I did my searching on Amazon and found a number of longer heating pads, but the cheaper versions appeared to be just that - cheaply made and having unsatisfactory performance. Reliamed had the best reviews, seemed geared toward professionals which indicated it would be longer lasting, and was reasonably priced.

The Reliamed Heating Pad is a heavy-duty piece of equipment. The pad is well made and the covering is constructed of tightly woven flannel. The pad is large and for me extends from my shoulder to nearly my fingertips. Taller individuals will not obtain that amount of area coverage, but will still find this one of the larger pad areas available. The cord is not the typical flimsy electric cord found on most commercially available heating pads, but is the thick, round type found on professional products; the plug is three-pronged. The digital control is easy to use and easy to reset. It beeps once, softly, when it is turned on and five times as it shuts off; the quiet beeping is important if you use this at night and sleep with someone who wakens easily.

There are two minor things I feel could be improved; however, they are not serious enough to cause me to give this item a lower rating. There is a piece of velcro attached to one side of the cover which is in the middle of the cover. If you do not wrap the pad around the body part being warmed, it gets in the way when you be lying on the pad. The longer velcro piece extends beyond the top of the pad and also gets in the way. I have not cut it off because there is always a chance someone might need to wrap this around their lower back. However, the size of the pad and the amount of velcro attached would limit the individual's size to less than a 37-inch waist circumference. The second issue is that the pad heats about ten degrees beyond the set temperature when first turned on. My therapist recommended a temperature of 108 for my problem which means this initially heats to 118 degrees before dropping down to the correct temperature. I have found that by turning the heating pad on about five minutes before I am going to lay down, I can have it heat up and reliably drop to the correct temperature before I need it.

If you are in need of a longer or professional grade heating pad, you cannot go wrong purchasing a Reliamed. My therapist liked it so well, she is purchasing several for her clinic. Had I not found a Christmas special, I would have purchased at Amazon as their price and customer service are outstanding.

I have Fibromyalgia which causes severe back and joint aches. I wanted a heating pad that had a nice, plush, soft cover. All the ones I found had cheap, thin, covers that weren't soft. Although this one was quite pricey, I would pay almost anything to get one that would help. This pad has a very soft, plush cover. It is a great size, allowing me to stay on the pad as I roll from one side to my back to the other side throughout the night. The unit has adjustable timer and heat control. I like my heating pad pretty hot and I go up to 126 (of 160).

The suggestions I have for the manufacturer are: 1) Make the timer longer than 60 minutes - 120 or 180 at least. Just as I am about to get to sleep or have just gotten to sleep, it goes off and because I am not in a deep sleep the pain wakes me up again. 2) In addition to the unit turning off after 60 minutes, it emits 5 sharp beeps before it turns off. If I wasn't awake when it turned off, I am after hearing the beeps! Fortunately I most often use a fan at night, so it covers the sound of the beebs. 3) Add a night light to the control panel so that when you have to turn it back on and/or reset it in the night, you don't need to turn on a light to do it. 4) Lose the velcro straps. I would imagine they are not long enough to go around the mid section of most people who use this product anyway. Also, as I said, the heating pad is wide enough to completely roll over from side to side and stay on the heating pad. I cut the velcro strap off, but the strap it attaches to is sewn on and can't easily be taken off.

However, despite these minor manufacturing issues, I would still give it 5 stars!

I have chronic pain and this heating pad helps me make it though the day at work. I have had several heating pads, and this one is exceptional. Most heating pads either are not hot enough or too hot. This one allows the user to choose the exact temperature (in degrees). Even the cover is plush. I cannot say enough about this product. The only thing I would change about this product: I would want the Velcro to be detachable (it is attached to the cover on the width side) or add additional Velcro to allow the heating pad to be attached on the long side of the heating pad. You will not regret your purchase.
