Irritating Men & Idiotic Women Get It On...A Lot,
By Andrea Griffin "Avid Reader" (Sterling Heights, MI USA) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Bodyguard (Mass Market Paperback)
Normally I adore Gena Showalter & it was her name on this horrible anthology which sold me to (unfortunately) buying it. What a waste of $7.99 (plus a few hours I'll never get back).
Three stories...all seemed to revolve around irritating men who either misjudge, mistreat, or out and out lie to the women they supposedly love. But hey, that's ok, as long as they can have sex, at least that's according to the dim bulb women in these stories. I don't know about you, but nothing makes me hornier than a guy who lies to me...lol! I won't rehash the plots of these stories - mainly because I'd rather forget about them and call it a day. Save your brain cells & opt for much better stories by Showalter (like anything from her great "Lords of the Underworld" series). :)

3.5 stars - The Bodyguards - Temptation with a parnormal flair,
By
This review is from: The Bodyguard (Mass Market Paperback)
You'd never guess from the name, but surprise, surprise, The Bodyguard is a paranormal romance anthology.
"Temptation on Ice" by Cherry Adair is a T-FLAC short ~~ Time is running out for kidnapped scientist Michaela when Sebastian, the man she's dreamt of for years arrived to 'rescue' her. But Sebastian's assignment is to take out the sexy woman, he believes faked her own death and is working for the enemy on a bomb that will destroy the world ~~ While I liked the characters' back-story and thought that Sebastian's ability to borrow others' paranormal powers was pretty cool, I had a hard time getting past Sebastian boinking Michaela when he intends on killing her later. (3.5 stars - pretty good) "Temptation in Shadows" by Gena Showalter was my favorite story of the bunch ~~ Gabby is a survivor of an experiment that has left her with very dangerous powers. Sean is an operative in a paranormal agency working undercover as a bodyguard in order to get close to Gabby - his job is to determine if Gabby is a threat which needs to be neutralized. ~~ it seemed almost like this story should be connected to Showalter's Extraordinary Girl series, because of the superpowers, but I didn't recognize any character overlap. Sean is a great character, I loved his power of manipulating the shadows and the chemistry between him and Gabby is really good too. Even though I would have loved more, Showalter did a really good job of telling their story in this short space. (4.5 stars) "Hunting Temptation" by Lorie O`Clare ~~ The bounty hunter hero, Seth, tracking down a serial killer goes to his favorite 'source' - who unknown to Seth is a werewolf - for info and catches the attention of his informant's sister Jenna. Jenna is intrigued by the human and decides to evade her protective pack to entice Seth to scratch her itches - and inadvertently sets herself up as the next target for the killer ~~ I have never read anything by O'Clare before, so fans may not agree with me, but I really did not like story. Seth was pretty good character but my like for him just wasn't enough to overcome my dislike for his leading lady. Jenna was annoyingly TStL (too-stupid-to-live) most of the time but ... she's "not a slut" - awk, Jenna thinks this repeatedly and for some reason that phrase irked me big-time every time I read it. three fun urban fantasy romantic suspense,
This review is from: The Bodyguard (Mass Market Paperback)
"Temptation on Ice" by Cherry Adair. T-FLAC operative Sebastian Tremayne can turn seemingly invisible when he wants. His current assignment takes him and his partner Anatoly Cohen to a Russian Decommissioned Sub Base in the Arctic Circle where he is to keep the woman he loves and met five times before but never alone, nuclear physicist Dr. Michaela Giese safe.
"Temptation in Shadows" by Gena Showalter. Secret Agent Sean Walker controls the shadows between the living and the living. His current assignment is to rescue and keep the woman he loves Gabrielle Huit safe. "Hunting Temptation" by Lorie O'Clare. Human Seth Gere is a bounty hunter in search of serial killing Tray Long while falling in love with the sister of his prime informant Jeremy Drury. Unaware that the siblings are werewolves, Seth vows to keep the woman he loves Jenna Drury safe from the monster he stalks. These are three fun urban fantasy romantic suspense tales that fans of the authors will enjoy, but none of the paranormal thrillers contain the depth to maintain high levels of tension. I like anthologies. And, I really enjoy short form fiction - short stories, novellas, novelettes. Short form fiction provides just enough space for a well-told tale with several scenes, a limited set of characters, and just enough world-building to not be confusing. And, there are even anthologies of novellas that manage to add in romance or romantica into the anthology or novella format. This book is NOT one of those. The stories drag and the erotica overtakes the story - especially the Gena Showalter offering. The Cherry Adair is better, but unmemorable. And, frankly, after reading those two, I have given up. (Sorry, Lorrie O'Claire - I will try to read your story, but given the company it's in, I'm just not hopeful that it will be any better.)
There's so much good PNR out there, read it instead.

Two Great Stories,

I loved the stories by Adair and Showalter. The one by O'Clare was just ok. I don't usually like books by Showalter, but did enjoy this short story. Adair is pretty much on my auto-buy list. The first two stories were enjoyable and entertaining for quick reads.
