Nineteen year old Lauren Bacall makes her sizzling screen debut opposite Humphrey Bogart in this adaptation of Hemingway's wartime adventure. To Have and Have Not continues to bowl over audiences four decades after its initial release. The setting is Vichy-controlled Martinique, 1940. Bogart plays a hard-boiled apolitical American fisherman who gets swept up trying to help a drifter (Lauren Bacall), who has run out of centimes, and French freedom fighters who are trying to elude local Nazi collaborators. Supporting players Walter Brennan and Hoagy Carmichael keep the action brisk, but the scenes between silky Bacall and sullen Bogey exude a heat and humor that pervade the entire film.
