Boggle is hands down the most popular game with my literary family. The concept is simple - shake the letter cubes into the grid and then find the words in the matrix of letters. Boggle Deluxe (originally known as "Big Boggle", and later as "Boggle Master's Edition") is a worthy, even essential, upgrade to the regular versions 4x4 grid. It's simple math. With a five by five grid there are many more words in there - and particularly many more long words devilishly folded up in there. Plus, with the larger area, there are fewer dead plays. Even if you get a board with mostly consonants, there are bound to be a few productive nooks and crannies. To counteract this, the rules disallow 3 letter words. This version (Deluxe) has a plastic adapter that shields off a row allowing this set to play 4x4 or 5x5.
The Deluxe edition takes a great game and makes it even better. This our family's most played game. The trouble is that the 5x5 version stopped being manufactured in the USA back in '93 or so. Now it's an expensive sought after item. Hasbro UK sells it as "Super Boggle". See http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hasbro-41810-Super-Boggle/dp/B0002VZ2UK If you like Boggle, it's worth seeking out the 5x5 version. It's that much better.

I've played both standard Boggle (4x4) and Big Boggle / Boggle Deluxe (5x5), and I have to say that Big Boggle / Boggle Deluxe is so much better! It boggles my mind (sorry for the pun) that they haven't re-released the bigger version since 1997. I paid an outrageous price for one several years ago to replace our aging 1970's Big Boggle. That game has seen so much use the lettering on the old cubes started to wear off. If you can find this anywhere, I highly recommend it over the standard Boggle. If you're content with searching for shorter words then don't bother. But if you want a challenge and a better chance at finding super-long words (thereby impressing your opponents), this is definitely the one to buy. (Do the math... 25/16 = 56% more letters!)

We love the Boggle Deluxe and bought it despite its ridiculous cost. We were unable to find the larger size Boggle at a reasonable price, so we finally bought it anyway because we wanted to be able to make more complex words. It is an excellent game, but priced about three times what it should be, and we simply cannot understand why.

Hello. Hasbro. Anybody home? Make 5x5 big boggle again and enjoy the profits. For crying out loud. We took ours everywhere. Now it is lost. We miss boggle deluxe.

Our family has had Big Boggle since the 1970's. It was/is the most played game in our household. It was used so much that some of the letters wore off or there was ink on the letters because we would point at the letters with a pen. We did not want to spend more than $10 on a new game. My son, being the genious that he is, used label paper and cut out the shape of a cube. He wrote the letter needed in indelible magic marker and attached it to the cube. We now have a "newish" Big Boggle game. We currently play 3 to 4 times per week. Our family started playing this game when our sons were 5 and 10. They are now 24 and 30 and still play for hours. Best game EVER!

I was pleased to find Boggle Deluxe on Amazon. We have worn out two of the games and have had difficulty finding another one. The one we purchased was in very good condition and was received promptly.

I teach English in Germany and use both versions of Boggle in class, my students love them. This and Take Four are hands down their favorite games. I also do not understand why Hasbro, or someone else, has not re-released this game. The prices are just ridiculous. Thanks for the reviewer who said you could get it in Britain, maybe I'll look there for an additional 'big' Boggle.

If you play Boggle, big boggle, or master boggle or deluxe are all the same. Much more challenging . don't know why it isn't readily available anymore, I have an old one from 20 years or so ago, looks just like the one advertized and prob. cost me 10 dollars or less..........why the outrageous price? because it isn't mass produced anymore. a shame. Look for it at garage sales, my friend found one for a dollar.

This game, formerly Big Boggle, has been in my collection since I bought it in 2003 or so. A simple format with an enhanced version to make for more of a challenge. At game nights, friends' houses and game conventions, this game always draws a crowd. Once, someone made a 10-letter word. The most I've ever had was a seven-letter word.
A bigger board, but small enough to carry around for traveling and such. There is a device you can cover up part of the board with to make it a 4 X 4 board. Not sure why anyone would want to do that. But Boggle Deluxe is a "must have" for any word game fan. After Scrabble, it's propably the most popular word game of all. |
