Outstanding performances of great violin "warhorses.",
By D. R. Schryer (Poquoson, VA United States) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Bohemian Rhapsodies (Audio CD)
We are currently in the midst of a Golden Age of violin playing and Leila Josefowicz is one of the finest of an outstanding crop of young violinists, which includes Sarah Chang and Gil Shaham, among many others. Leila has everything -- a beautiful tone and phenomenal virtuosity combined with genuine artistry. I can think of no living violinist who surpasses her. The pieces on this CD may merely be tired old warhorses to some jaded tastes but, as performed by Leila, they are anything but tired and come across as the beautiful (and deservedly popular) masterpieces which they truly are. If you love the violin as I do, please get this CD and listen to these outstanding performances with fresh ears. If you do, you will be richly rewarded.

Leila Josefowicz is what music is all about,

The CD, and Artist I never get tired of listening to! These pieces are favorites of the younger virtuosi soloists - I've heard many other versions . None so far has captured the true spirit of this music as Ms. Josefowicz has. I look forward to more recordings!

PHENOMINAL!,
This review is from: Bohemian Rhapsodies (Audio CD)
This CD is incredible. The perfomances by Miss Josefowicz are one of the best if not the best performances of these selections that I have ever heard. The Carmen Fantasy is just perfect! This album has technique, emotion, and most importantly energy. She may be a pretty face but that is overshadowed by her talent and ability to back up her work and perform music the way that it's meant to be performed - with life and love. BUY THIS CD!

I can't think of a classical CD that gives me more pleasure than Bohemian Rhapsodies. Leila Josefowicz uses her instrument like Pavorotti uses his voice, she truly breathes life into her violin.

Bohemian Rhapsodies is a 1997 Philips Classics recording under the direction of Sir Neville Mariner who leads the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. We also have the immense pleasure to listen to violinist Leila Josefowicz. The music notes have been written by Leila Josefowicz and are quite interesting and well-written. Highly recommended. 5/5.

Disappointing,

Leila Josefowicz is one of my favorite violinists, and I like her in recording as well as in live performance, so it pains me to give her only 2 stars for this album. Every piece in this album has an air of perfunctoriness, and the venerable Academy orchestra under the equally venerable Sir Neville never seem to click with their gifted soloist. The recorded sound is good, not spectacular, but this neither adds to nor detracts from the fact that the "warhorses" on this album do not need another just polite compilation, especially from a violinist like Ms Josefowicz. Listen to her ealier "Solo" album, and you will get an idea of what fire and passion Ms Josefowicz can add to her technical prowess. Sadly, this is simply absent from the current album. If you've never heard these pieces before, you wouldn't mind this album at all, but if you have heard the old masters (e.g. Heifetz, Ricci, etc) handle them, you will be left wanting much more.

Ms. Josefowicz does a really great job!,

This album is veru interesting because Liela plays popular violin pieces. Her debut recording (concertos by Tchaikovsky and Sibelius) is ver great, and her second album "Solo" is wonderful. And this recording is beautiful as we expect. I think Liela Josefowivz does a good job. There are many popular pieces such as "Carmen Fantasy" and "Zigonerwizen" (Is this correct?), "Meditation de Thais" and rare pieces such as "Poems" by Chausson. I can know how lovely she play the violin. Oh, that is to say, she can sing with the violin! These passionate pieces are suited well to her. I hope she record more popular violin pieces! If you want to know about this violinist, it will work. And I will never be tired of listening to this one. Speaking of linernote, Liela write an interesting note. I think she is very intelligent, too!
