"The Boiling Pool" is a good horror novel about a gated community that lures a new family in -- one every three years -- so that the long-time residents can sacrifice one of the children.

At the center of the housing development is a narrow pool. The pool is very deep, and something lives at the bottom.

That *thing* ensures that the residents stay wealthy and successful ...as long as it receives its periodic sacrifice.

I've read quite a few of Gary Brandner's novels, and every one of them was solid.

It's a shame he doesn't publish anymore.

There was a six year gap between his last new paperback and "The Boiling Pool", then a four year wait for his limited-edition hardcover "Rot." He hasn't had a new book since.

(He did reissue his novels "Carrion" and "Floater" as trade paperbacks in the year 2000, though.)

I heard that the premises for "The Resort" by Bentley Little and "Sacrifice" by John Farris may be similar, but I can't comment on that because I haven't read either book yet.

Also recommended: "Salvation" by W.A. Heisler, "Nightflyer" and "The Lyssa Syndrome" by Christopher Fahy, "Island" and Midnight's Lair" by Richard Laymon, and "Wither" by John Passarella.

Other recommended books by Gary Brandner: "The Howling" (The three books are much better than, and different from, the movies), "Carrion", "Floater", "Rot", "The Brain Eaters", and "Hellborn."
