fabulous flute music,
This review is from: Boismortier: Concertos for Five Flutes (Audio CD)
This is a truly beautiful piece of flute music. Due to the wonders of technology, Stephen Schultz has been able to play all of the five flute parts himself and in the process has produced a remarkable work of art. If you like pure flute music, I highly recommend this. It is an interesting composition played but a truly talented player.

Multitracking Marvel!,

This review is from: Boismortier: Concertos for Five Flutes (Audio CD)
Can five baroque flutes manage to sound like a whole chamber orchestra? There are some dogged skeptics who might even wonder if five baroque flutes can gather in one studio without demolishing each other. But Stephen Schultz has the answer: he plays all five parts -- a dependable way to make sure that tunings are compatible, however a-historical multi-tracking might seem -- on the mostly keyless wooden baroque flute pictured on the cover. Best of all, he plays these virtuoso pieces virtuosically, with great panache.
Boismortier was a flautist and recorderist, and his music is quite well-known to the flautist and recorderists of today though obscure to most other people. There is another recording of these 'concertos' for five flutes, played by five flautist soloists of 'Concert Spirituel'. I hear more verve in Schultz's recording. You can see Stephen Schultz in a very clever clip on YouTube. I'll attach the link in a comment. |
