EXHILIRATING,

Boismortier is known to every student of the (especially alto) recorder by his quite mediocre though very instructive pieces for this instrument.
So i was quite suspectful about this cd. After a few bars i understood that this cd is something else. It contains the complete religious works of Boismortier - just seven motets (we know about another motet, but it is now lost). One of these, the Exaudiat te Dominus, is a "grand motet", based on Psalm 19. The other works are "petits motets", and they are certainly a short pieces. Simply put, the grand motet is a great work: very concise, very lyrical and full of charm and subtle joy. It's the pinnacle of this cd. The petits motets are a delightful short pieces for sopran solo and small instrumental ensemble, and the excellent soprano here, Veronique Gens, is in her best. Try the "motet pour le Sainte Sacrement" (track 11) - a sheer beauty! I can't think of a better performance to these pieces - it's perfect! It seems that this exhilirating music is tailor-made to Herve Niquet and his Le concert Spirituel. this is a gold cd, and the recording is superb.
