About the Author

We were sorry to hear of the passing of Judi Dains. It was a priviledge to work with her. From childhood, Judi Dains was busy with her hands and mind, creating with abandon. Quilting escaped her notice until the late 1980s. She kept envisioning wild clothes, only to find out that her visions were called wearable art. That is what led her into the quilt world.

Through the years, Judi won more than 275 awards. Her work has been shown in galleries and public buildings, including the governor's office in California's State Capitol.

Have you ever picked up a piece of hand dyed fabric or a batik and seen shapes in the way the color flows? Well, that is the key step in creating the projects in Judi Dains new book "Bold and Beautiful Artful Quilts From Just One Fabric". Judi's quilts, and the techniques she uses to create them, will captivate your imagination. The book covers everything you need to know about what to look for when purchasing the fabric, to marking out what designs you see in the fabric. After the piece is marked, you will need to quilt it and there is a terrific chapter on choosing thread. You will need several types of thread for outlining the design elements, quilting the design elements and quilting the background. My favorite lesson on machine quilting the elements was quilting inside the flowers and leaves. The results are stunning and the quilt patterns are well worth the price of the book. After this you will color the quilt using either fabric paints or inks. Just add a little bling with embellishments like rhinestones, beads, buttons and yoyo's and your project is finished. You will soon master Judi's techniques by working your way through the five projects included in the book.

This book is simple and easy to follow and in just a few days anyone can create a wonderful quilt. I have just about zero art talent and had a wonderful time creating what I think is a masterpiece, I am ready to create my next project! I recommend this to anyone who wants to do something with fiber and wants to explore quilt projects that are not pieced or appliqued. It's wonderful to explore and create other techniques.

I love, love, love this book. The pictures of the quilts are beautiful, and the instructions (should you want to create one of these beauties yourself) are clear and very helpful. I'm going to try making one of these lovely things myself so I can enjoy my own unique piece of art. If you love quilting and color, this is a great book to check out.

Gather your materials of thread (that's LOTS of different colors and weights), a pretty Batik fabric, some crystals, yo-yos and a few quilting designs. What do these things get you? Why a very pretty art quilt.

I have called this thread painting in my past life. It is a lot of work but it does come out to be a very beautiful quilt. The author talks about choosing the right fabric first. Once you find a Batik you like, hang it up on the design wall and stand back. See those flowers or leaves or maybe even a vase? This is what you will outline.

Next you need to have the right threads. Colors and weights make this type of quilt. Be sure to read over the section on this subject. Having a pair of quilting gloves eases the "painting" process. They help you to "grab" the quilt and do the free motion movements you need. Be sure to start in the middle of the quilt so the stretch that bias pieces create will be distributed even in each direction.

You don't have to have your own quilting designs as the author provides several pages you can use. And be combining them, you have even more. Be sure to take a practice run on similar fabric/bat/back materials so you know how to handle the actual quilt. Better yet, after your practice run, why not start with a pillow so you don't have to fight with all the fabric and you will get a good feel for how to create these art quilts.

The book ends with project directions for creating a bag with this technique and a gallery of various quilts. All in all, if this type of quilting is something you have wanted to try, this book will cover all the basic steps.

This book was recommended to me and it has lived up to its reputation.
It is wonderful just to look through. The different techniques used were a source of inspiration. There seems to be something for everyone.
Of course the price was great too.

Great book. Looks brand new - not for long though! Give me lots of ideas to work with my hand dyed or ice dyed fabrics.
