WriteGirl is a project of Community Partners ®, a nonprofit organization. WriteGirl provides programs for inner-city high school girls centered on the craft of creative writing and empowerment through self-expression. Through one-on-one mentoring and monthly workshops, girls are given techniques, insights and hot tips for great writing in all genres from professional women writers. WriteGirls support, encourage and challenge each other to express their emotions, ideas and dreams on paper and out loud. The result is a channeling of their thoughts and emotions, improved self-confidence and life skills and, most important, a window to a wide world of possibilities. Bold Ink is WriteGirl’s second anthology.

From the Author

When the submissions started rolling in for this anthology, we were hoping we’d get the depth-charges that we hear at our monthly workshops. And we did. Much of the writing in this book came directly from an experiment at a mentoring session or WriteGirl workshop.

With more than seventy women and girls in one room, all focused on unlocking their own doors to creative self-expression, WriteGirl workshops are electric. My absolute favorite moment is when a girl stands, rather, springs up and shares with everyone something wonderful she just wrote, after having said, "I can’t write anything" or "I don’t have anything to say" only a few hours earlier. That’s an instant change in perception and a powerful experience to take away and apply confidently to other situations that might start out with "I can’t" or "I’m not." At the end of each workshop, everyone writes a thread – an anonymous comment on the day. You’ll find these threads at the beginning of every chapter – they’ll give you a glimpse of the inspiration and solace found in the word-world of WriteGirl.

There are stories behind all the stories you’ll read here – complicated, multitextured, emotional backdrops to these pieces of mind. Like a photograph and the eye that captured the image, it is impossible to separate the art from the artist. And who’d want to? You’ll get to know these WriteGirls as you read what they have to say and what they choose not to say.

This book should be distributed in every place where girls and women gather, and maybe they should gather just to read and learn and be inspired by this book. It is a beautiful journey through the many stages, joys, challenges and celebrations of being female in today's world. Bravo to WriteGirl for bringing these powerful voices together. Bold Ink is truly a triumph.

This is a beautiful collection. I got it as a gift and am buying some to give as gifts to other people. There are pieces written by at risk teen-age girls and the women who mentor them and the subject matter is wide and varied - but it is very inspirational and great for people of all ages. The essays and poems and stories are amazing!
