Book Description

April 13, 2010
The woman who elevated food writing to an art is at her best in this mouthwatering collection of memoirs and recipes. Boldly confessing her prejudices and her passions, M.F.K Fisher includes more than 140 recipes in the 17 chapters of this book.
Dishes for every course of every meal can be found here, from the simplest to the most esoteric: tidbits, appetizers, breads, pastries, fish, fowl, meats, soups, vegetables, desserts, and casseroles.
Whether recalling forbidden fruits from her childhood (such as mashed potatoes with catsup), her mother’s legendary mustard pickles, or a Caribbean bride singing about peas and rice, each description is flavored with the eloquence, warmth, and wit that became Fisher’s hallmark. Among the many admirers Fisher accrued during her illustrious and varied career was W.H. Auden, who said of her, “I do not know of anyone in the United States who writes better prose.”

Review

Praise for M.F.K. Fisher

"[Fisher] writes as one intelligent adult to another—practically, often profoundly, and always beautifully. If eating means more to you than steak drowned in bottled sauces, then she's what you've been looking for." —The San Francisco Examiner

"If I were still teaching high school English, I'd use Fisher's books to show how to write simply, how to enjoy food and drink, but, most of all, how to enjoy life. Her books are one feast after another." —Frank McCourt, author of Angela's Ashes

About the Author

Born in Michigan in 1908, M. F. K. Fisher developed her love of cooking in France, where she lived with her first husband, Al Fisher. She began to write about food in 1935. In 1938 she moved to Switzerland with her second husband, the painter Dillwyn Parish. After his death in 1941 she returned to California and several years later married the publisher Donald Friede, with whom she had two daughters. In the early 1960s she became active in the American civil rights movement and went to Mississippi as a volunteer teacher. She died in 1992. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars A memoir and cookbook both, August 16, 2000
By
Sophia (the Pacific Northwest) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)
"With Bold Knife and Fork" was the last book of culinary and writing great M.F.K. Fisher to focus solely on food. This book is a wonderful collection of recipes, with an especially interesting section on vegetables; and also contains humorous and moving anecdotes, written in excellent, finished prose. Only M.F.K. Fisher can make eating mashed potatoes with ketchup sound like a religious ritual; or make you laugh when discussing how a romance came to an end when a snoopy, ill-informed potential partner ruined a sauce for a dinner she was making. This is a terrific book for diehard Fisher fans, but also a very good, intelligent, and amusing cookbook in its own right.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite Fisher book, April 1, 2011

This review is from: With Bold Knife and Fork (Paperback)
Fisher fans know of her way with evocative prose, but she's damn funny as well; that's why this book is my favorite. She is in top form in this one, and her tendency to be a little, dare I say it, pretentious is less evident!
