Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

It's gutsy for a young conductor and a second-tier orchestra to take on a program of showpieces, but Oue and the Minnesotans acquit themselves well, exhibiting flair and color in pieces that need them to make an effect. The big works are Liszt's Les Préludes and Ravel's Bolero. The Liszt gets a terrific reading--just listen to the warmth of the strings as they sing the melody about 3'40" in the delicacy of the wind phrases and the power of the grand climax. There's charm aplenty too, as in the lightly tripping Brahms Hungarian Dance. The lesser known works will please; Dinicu's "Hora" swirls vigorously and Klemperer's smiling "Merry Waltz" will happily surprise those who think him incorrigibly stolid. As usual for this label the sound is superior, with wide dynamics, sweet treble, burly bass, and oodles of detail and other audiophile virtues. An unalloyed delight! --Dan Davis

5.0 out of 5 stars Emotional!, July 28, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Bolero: Orchestral Fireworks (Audio CD)
I bought this CD as someone who knew Eiji Oue when he was in Boston, and I am thrilled with what he has done with the Minnesota Orchestra. The sound quality on this recording is great, and Eiji and his orchestra give an energetic and emotional performance. Having been a student at Interlochen Arts Camp for several years (and those of you who have been there know what I am talking about), I still cannot listen to "Les Preludes" without bursting into tears. The CD is a wonderful addition to anyone's collection, whether you are a fan of classical music or not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Recording, June 26, 2001

This is another topnotch Reference Recordings / MN Orchestra disc. All 15 minutes of Bolero is a perfect, gradual crescendo. And the brass in Liszt's Les Preludes will knock your socks off. I wish I could give this 10 stars!!!
