An Underrated Interpretation of Ravel's Music, April 19, 2001
This review is from: Bolero (Audio CD)
I didn't know what to expect when I heard this CD, since Christoph von Dohnanyi isn't one of the world's most popular conductors with regards to CD sales. However, I was very pleasantly surprised. His vibrant conducting of some of Ravel's most popular orchestral works is superb, graced with warmth and compassion for Ravel's music. I think Dohnanyi's reading of Ravel's music is as valid an interpretation as Haitink's. And yet there are some unexpectedly pleasant surprises, most notably the fastest "Bolero" I have heard. Of course the Cleveland Orchestra gives a performance worthy of its recognition by some music critics as one of the world's three greatest orchestras, in the august company of the philharmonic orchestras of Berlin and Vienna. Those looking for a fine introduction to Ravel's orchestral music will be amply rewarded.
