Great book for Bolgerphiles, January 12, 2011
This review is from: Bolger boats: Combining Small boats and The folding schooner, and other adventures in boat design (Paperback)
This book combines "Small Boats" and "The Folding Schooner" which are two of Bolgers earlier publications. It gives access to a selection from the first half of his work which is far less accessible on the internet than his later work. It is essentially a compilation of complete boatplans (very small scale) and building keys.
It is a book for people with a real interest in boat design and Bolger's in particular. This is not a "how to build a boat" manual. However, many of the plans include building keys.
I should not give it 5 stars because the typeset is small and the plans very small scale (in common with similar paperback books of its vintage). However, for a mad boatbuilder like myself, it is a prize I cherish.
As with all Bolgers writing, you can learn an enormous amount from studying the work and plans, but you have to be interested. I have enjoyed reviewing the designs and trying to understand the thought processes. His writing is entertaining and clear.
