My favorite recording,
By
This review is from: Bolling: Suite for Flute & Jazz Piano Trio (Audio CD)
I bought this on cassette over 20 years ago, and it continues to be #1 in my top ten list of favorite recordings. It is a perfect blend of baroque and jazz. I remember playing this in my car and my passenger was amazed at the structure of the music, particularly transitions within the pieces. I like all of Bollings series of "_____ and jazz piano" but this is the best of all. It remains fresh & creative. How could anyone not find this music compelling?

Delighted it's available again!,

As a flutist, this is one of my favorite pieces of music both to play and to hear. There are other recordings available, but none with the upbeat, jazzy flair of the original Bolling-Rampal collaboration, and I did not want to remix my 30-year-old vinyl copy into a CD. I bought the Music Minus One version several months ago and it sounded almost funereal compared to the original. A strong recommendation for jazz and classical music lovers as well as for those just beginning to explore these genres.

There's nothing in the world quite like it!,

I'm a fan of all sorts of music, from film music to pop/rock, folk, some country, vocal, opera, classical, and even some heavy metal. I don't have ANY music like this other than some of the other Bolling suites. This and "Suite No. 2" for Flute and Jazz Piano are ESSENTIAL. They never get old, and are like old friends every time you hear them, as they never fail to deliver. Whatever type of music you like or don't like, if you try this disc out and don't find yourself feeling happier than you were before you put it on, there's something wrong with you. One of those rare discs (like the Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds") that should be in every person's music library, to pop on from time-to-time as they go through life. I'm sure I will be listening to this and other Bolling jazz suites for decades and decades to come. He is the master of this art form as far as I'm concerned.

An oldie but a GREATie!,

First heard this record in a restaurant in 1978. Had to go get it immediately. Finally, we can get in on CD too! Mostly uptempo lounge jazz (poor description, I know), SFFAJPT will become a favorite of yours, I'll bet. Good melodic hooks, thunderous piano, and expressive flute playing. One's taste in music is so subjective it can be difficult or impossible to denote it words, so therein lies the flaw. But this is a low-risk purchase. There is almost no way you won't like SOMETHING on this disc.

Great songs; enduring album,

I bought this record when it came out back in late '74 or early '75 when I was 11 years old. I was already a pianist and it inspired me to take up the flute as well. It's probably the best collection of flute/jazz piano songs I've ever heard. Rampal's playing is smooth and flawless, and Claude Bolling's instrumentation on the piano is a perfect complement. The songs vary in tempo and style, and every cut is worth listening to. Highly recommended.

Numero Uno,

I was introduced to these pieces not by hearting but by playing them. My wife plays the flute, I play the piano and she brought home the music which we worked on. I liked them all but the first two are my favorites (Fugace is a close third): Baroque and Blue and Sentimentale. (You don't realize how essential the bass and drums are until they are missing.)
These are the perfect blend of jazz and classical, intellectual yet fun pieces that delight on repeated hearings. The ensemble could not be better and Bolling is phenomental. This is the perfect CD for background music at a dinner party.

It's Absolutely magnificent. I've never hard before this kind of variation of jazz. It's so elegant and so emotive at the same time!!!. I personally recommend it.

Life Saver,

Normally reviews try to tell you about the music. In this one I will only tell you what the music did for me. When I was 14, I was in the hospital for two months for a corrective surgical process on my leg. While I was in, I became very depressed, had trouble eating, and lost a lot of weight off a frame that was not exactly hefty to start with. This album (and a version of Handel's Water Music which I'm trying to find) I listened to every day, again and again. It kept me from becoming utterly despondent. I have heard no other music as serenely cheerful and bouyant.

Awesome!,
By Yun Jung Kim (Seoul, South Korea) - See all my reviews

It is clear that both flute and piano sounds are beautiful. But what if they were sounded at the same time? This album is the one that can solve that question. I will choose these two tracks, if I were asked to do, "Baroque and blue" and "Sentimental". "Sentimental", starts with the piano solo, which seems to be rather normal, but through the whole music, that piano sound changes into more jazzy sound. The music becomes bright, vivid, as it gets faster and faster. I 'm sure there would be no regrets choosing this album, especially for who enjoys crossover music. I think this album adorned the history of crossover music! strongly recommend! |
