5.0 out of 5 stars Cultural Eye Opener!, July 23, 2008

I've been playing steel guitar for 30 years, and I was never aware of this cultural phenomenon in India! The playing is different from western steel guitar in that it's mostly single note lines instead of chords. This music is very well produced and well played. You get the feeling that there is intense competition for every musician's chair in these sessions - every player, every part is in tune and in time.

This CD is a cultural awakening for me, much as Bob Stone's "Sacred Steel" field recordings of the 90s. I hope that more Indian steel music will hit the international market soon.

Don't you love to put on a new record, discover music you love that you never knew existed, then listen through the record and find that each song is just as good? Then the songs stick in your head for days as you work, jog, fall asleep, etc....

Well, this is one of those records. I envy you for the fun you will have when you get this crazy, talented, fun music!

5.0 out of 5 stars Globalization coming full circle in the most pleasant way!, October 9, 2011
This review is from: Bollywood Steel Guitar (Audio CD)
I came across this CD while surfing the net for information about a recent Heineken commercial that featured a Bollywood song "Jan Pehchan Ho". This instrumental version of the song is included in this CD. I loved the commercial because of the way it integrated the bollywood song in a commercial for a beer from Netherlands set in a sushi bar. As someone who grew up in India in 70s and 80s, I have loved these Bollywood songs that featured steel guitar for their infectious and danceable beats and rhythms without ever knowing what a steel guitar was. I am sure the Bollywood musicians were copying aspects of western music while creating these infectious melodies but in the process they have created something altogether new which is now being popularized in the west. Go buy this instrumental CD if you love Bollywood music (minus the words) and open your eyes to something new and totally wonderful!
