Gr 10 Up-A narrative history of the political, economic, and social background; causes; and events of the revolution and civil war. In the first half of the book, special attention is given to topics such as the aspirations of the important social groups in Russian society. Not neglected are the non-Russian peoples within the empire, their positions, and the Bolsheviks' reaction to them. The closing chapter is a provocative essay exploring the legacies of the revolution and in the geopolitical thinking of the rest of the world. In addition to the text, there are a few maps and eight pages of black-and-white archival photographs. The rest of the book consists of substantial biographies of leading figures, 53 pages of primary documents, a short glossary, and an annotated bibliography divided by topic. This book is a product of solid scholarship and an excellent choice for libraries. It will be of interest to highly motivated, college-bound students and to social-studies teachers wanting to refine their own understanding of this period.-Elizabeth Talbot, University of Illinois, Champaign
