The Year Of The Powell Comes To A Close With His Simple & Heartwarming Score To Bolt,

This review is from: Bolt [Original Motion Picture Score] (Audio CD)
So far this year John Powell has done Jumper, Horton Hears A Who, Stop-Loss, Kung Fu Panda (with Zimmer), Hancock & now Bolt. I don't know about you but to me that is one impressive slate of films that demonstrates talent, voice and variety.
Animation is no strange land for John Powell who is undoubtedly the king of animation scoring in the modern age. Bolt is actually his first Disney animation picture. We get a short score release on the CD but Powell fans will rejoice with familiar percussion and rhythms that are unique to his style. Powell introduces a rather simple and heartfelt theme that represents the more epic Bolt moments and he touches base with it a couple times throughout the score, most notably in the track "Rescuing Penny" which happens to be my favorite track. The main theme I guess for the movie would probably be the one found in "Home At Last/Barking At The Moon (Reprise)". It's light and springy and has the Powell feel to it. Surprisingly this is a rather quiet score when compared to other Powell efforts. Lots of gentle strings with some brass. Powell does incorporate some synths and electronics which has always been part of his style and they help add an intensity to the action cues, especially "Scooter Chase". All in all this is a nice and light way to end quite an impressive year for John Powell. Bolt may not be the best thing he has done (it definitely can't compare to his amazing score for Horton Hears A Who), but it didn't feel like rehashing and after 5 scores in a year that is a great thing. 2008 has been the busiest year for him and he has maintained a standard of quality and emotion that I have found in each and every one of his scores. Powell continues to be one of the greatest composers working in the industry today.

Great Soundtrack,
This review is from: Bolt [Original Motion Picture Score] (Audio CD)
I purchased this soundrack for my daughter for Christmas, but I've gotten hooked on it as well. The CD includes a song by Mylie Cyrus and another song from the movie, but the rest is all the score (instrumental.)
If you saw the movie, you know that John Powell really created an excellent score for this film that more than stands by itself. Because Bolt is an upbeat film, the score is upbeat as well, with some excellent "action" music as well as calmer, more relaxed fare with enjoyable textures and aural cues. I generally don't post Amazon reviews but thought this soundtrack deserved some praise. Definitely recommended.

My kids are huge Bolt fans and love the music. There are only 2 songs that have words. The rest are all score. They still really like the CD.

Disappointed with this cd as most of it is the original score from the movie. My son is a big bolt fan so he is pretty happy with it. There are only two songs on this cd so if you are into listening to musical scores this is the cd for you if not dont buy it and be disappointed.

This CD is the CD that introduced me to John Powell and it was a fantastic way to do it. The way Powell incorporates simply down to earth melodies within the score make it easy to listen to. I have but one criticism. The first two songs by Jenny Lewis and Miley Cyrus. I wish, instead of hiring "popular" artists to "sing" their songs they could have let John Powell work his magic and an extra two tracks. As it is I feel that they take up unneeded space on the CD as I skip them every time. However, the good far outweghs the bad.
NOTE--This review is written by my 15 year old grandson, Francis. I don't have the knowledge or expertise to comment.

This has become one of my favorite scores to listen to all the way through. Especially the more exciting tracks like "Rescuing Penny" and the tracks that follow. John Powell really did a great job with this soundtrack and in my perception capturing the essence of the canine character Bolt, even down to the galloping rhythm. Anyway- a great addition for score lovers.

The music included is absolutely breathtaking. However, this soundtrack does not have all the music from the film. In fact, the very songs I bought it for are not even included.

Definitely worth buying!,

If you're a fan of John Powell you should most certainly purchase this. If you are a fan of orchestral movie scores then this is still an interesting buy. Like always, John Powell produces a splendid mix of beautiful live orchestration and his stylized percussive electronics. Most noticeable in the thematic action sequences which are very cool.
He brings it home with the emotion of the film with vibrant themes for the movie's characters. Bolt appeared to have 2 themes, one for his real self, best displayed in "Meet Bolt" and "Rescuing Penny", and another for his fantasy action hero persona, heard in "Bolt Transforms" and "Scooter Chase". Mitten's theme (at first) has a Godfather-Esq sound which later is played with more major chords (less sad sounding). There are two songs, "Where Were You On St. Rhino's Day?" and "A Friend In Need" which play during Rhino's speeches which have themes such as "do the impossible" and "never abandon a friend in need" (reminds me of the show Gurren Lagann). In short this soundtrack has very cool action music and very nice soft music for easy listening and is as a whole a wonderful add to any collection of movie music.
