Book Description

February 1989
Educated in Harvard and Trinity College, Oxford, Captain Charles De Vane is an unlikely candidate for exposing the more erotic facets of Edwardian society. He subtitles his book "Voluptuous Years as the Viceroy's Emissary in the Indian Rajah's Court" and involves the reader in the most detailed and intimate accounts of his sexual escapades serving in the British Army in South Africa and India in 1899. Leaving no sexual taboos untested or feats untried, Captain De Vane tests the limits of Edwardian society.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time!, March 29, 2000

This review is from: Bombay Bound (Paperback)
Unless you like the same sadistic scene replayed over and over, give this one a pass. If you've read any of Manton's other books, you'll recognize the scenarios played out here--women's rear ends abused in various ways. Unfortunately, this is much more repetitive than some of his earlier works. It also lacks the "woman as willing participant" angle that makes other books in the genre far more enjoyable.

If you are looking for a book with sex from end to end (forgive the pun) this book is NOT for you ...

Bombay Bound is a story told in the eyes of young Captian Charles DeVane, an officer of the Sussex Regiment, in 1899 with most of his story occurring in India.

As and oficer he is charged with the duty of guarding a group of young English girls and their teacher returning home to a rural outpost in India.

The story is detailed to such an extent that this appears to be an autobiography with very real and acceptable account of the trial, tribulations and conflicts in the Indian subcontinent during the British occupation.

The erotic sex scenes fit so well into the story and the character development giving them that very salacious real world feel...

There is some S&M in this book but it is not overdone iand fits into the time ....

5.0 out of 5 stars Manton on top of his game.....stellar erotica, November 27, 2011
This review is from: Bombay Bound (Paperback)
BOMBAY BOUND is Manton's sequel to THE AMOROUS ADVENTURES OF CAPT. CHARLES DEVANE (Grove Press) also published as TROPIC OF VENUS (Blue Moon). DeVane is Manton's only sympathetic leading man, and he's a bigtime lecher. All the components necessary for Manton to write at the top of his game are present in this two book series: accurate 1800s history; wry British humour; and stimulating erotica.

Capt. Charles DeVane is Manton's derivation of George MacDonald Fraser's Flashman. Both characters are lusty Victorian military officers doing tours of duty in foreign climes; both are cowardly but funnier than a good Chris Rock punchline.

Spanking is abundant in these two books, but never goes overboard as in Manton's ELAINE COX, THE BLUE TRAIN and some of THE CAPTIVE books. The historical backdrop is pertinent to the plot, an increasingly rarer aspect of Manton's later work. BOMBAY BOUND's sexual escapades are genuinely arousing, i.e. the girl on the rocking horse in Chapter 11; and the spiced saddle-balm routine in Chapter 7, a scene couched in the most hilarious language.

Erotic historical fiction doesn't get any better than this.
