5.0 out of 5 stars Classic, great party game, February 9, 2008
By
Goosecat (Vancouver, WA) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Bomberman Land (Video Game)
If you are like me, you are interested in this game for the classic multiplayer battle mode not the single player story mode. Before buying this game, I looked around the internet everywhere for some information about the battle mode but couldn't find much. Most reviews were of the story mode. So after playing this game a few days, here is my review of the battle mode in the hopes it will help somebody else.

If you haven't played bomberman before, here is a quick summary: You play on a single screen and lay 3-second time bombs in the hopes of blowing up your opponents. You can blow up yourself so be careful. There are bombable blocks all over that occasionally reveal power-ups that increase your abilities. It is super easy to learn and each game plays out differently which makes it a great party game. Kids as young as 6 can effectively play.

CONTROLS: Up to 4 at a time and each person will need a wiimote which you hold sideways. Ergonomics leave something to be desired and your hand might cramp up if you play for a long time but it's not bad. It can be tough to control your player if you pick up a lot of speed. You don't need any nunchucks although there is the option of using the nunchuck instead of the wiimote (nunchuck still needs to be attached to the wiimote though). You can substitute a gamecube controller for a wiimote.

Computer opponent skill levels can be set at easy, normal, and hard. You can not set up teams and there is no online play.

BATTLE SETTINGS: Choose your own board layout and other options for the first 4 settings.
1)Normal - You try to blow other people up and be the last one standing. Impression: This is the classic version and very fun.
2)Star - Stars are hidden behind soft (bombable) blocks and whoever collects the most stars at the end of the time limit wins. If you die, all your stars get dispersed and you instantly come back to life. Impression: Fun especially if you want to die as much as you want and still be in the game.
3)Point - Get points for blowing up opponents and lose points for getting blown up. When you die, you instantly come back to life. Impression: Not much fun because there are a limited number of points that end up being scored and the scoring system is tough to grasp and keep track of.
4)Crown - All players are placed on one side of the board and the crown on the other. Whoever gets to the crown first, wins. Impression: A fun twist. Similar to the Normal mode because it is highly beneficial to blow up others but the strategy is slightly different. You can wait for other people to create the path and try to sneak through or you can try to create your own path or you can forget about the path and try killing everybody.
5)All out - Randomizes settings as well as board layout. Impression: Doesn't add much to the game except to provide the element of surprise.
6)Wii - You don't have a player on the screen and there are no soft blocks. Point the wiimote at the screen and hit a button to throw a bomb. Objects randomly appear on the screen and you get points for bombing them. Impression: Not fun. The screen ends up being filled with tons of objects and pointers. There is a 1-2 second delay from the time you throw the bomb to the bomb actually landing on the spot. Then you have to wait another 2-3 seconds for your bomb to blow. By that time, some other bomb has often already blown up the object. The whole thing turns into a big random mess.

CHARACTER SELECTION: There are only 6 characters available to choose from initially. You can't use your Mii which would have been awesome. If you play the story mode, you can unlock all the 48 characters. There's not much point to this since all the characters play the same.

BOARD LAYOUT: There are 24 different layouts although a lot of them are just combinations. Most of the layouts are fun.
Holes- These are in place of hard (non-bombable) blocks. You can't walk on a hole but a bomb flame will extend over the hole. Makes it more difficult because you can't hide behind a hole to avoid a bomb.
Weeble Wobbles - Hard blocks that move when bombed. Very interesting because the layout changes throughout the game as the wobbles get bombed. Your strategy for staying alive needs to be continuously updated as the layout changes.
See-saws - If you put a bomb on one end and step on the other, you can catapult your bomb in the hopes of blowing somebody up. You can also catapult other players but you have to get the timing just right. The seesaws don't restrict or affect your movement in any way. This is a lame option because you can only catapult your bomb in a couple directions. There is no way to pick up bombs and throw them in this version so I guess this is the inadequate substitute.
Conveyors - Belts that move you or your bomb. Keeps you on your toes because you never know when a bomb is heading your way.
Trapdoors - Fall into one and you appear at one of the other trapdoors.
Tunnels - 4 way tunnels that block your view so you can hide in them or lay hidden bombs in them.
Turns - Kicking the bombs across these causes the bombs to change direction.
Inferno - All soft blocks, no hard blocks. No place to hide once the soft blocks are gone. Gets frenetic quickly which can be fun.
Speed - Standard layout except everyone has max speed. This sucks because you are going so fast, it is difficult to control your player.
Open - No hard blocks thus nowhere to hide.
Random - Randomly selects layouts including combinations. By far the best option because each game gets a new layout even within the same set.

You can set the size of the game board to Large, Medium, or Small but I just play at the standard "large" size. I don't see the point of having smaller sizes.

SET RULES: Adjust number of wins needed to win a set, time limit, sudden death (blocks start falling down to crush you as time runs out), random or fixed starting position, and poison skull.
There are 3 revenge settings which come into play when you die:
1)Off - You die and you can't play anymore.
2)On - You can drop bombs anywhere on the screen to try to blow up one of the remaining players. You control where you want to drop the bomb with the d-pad.
3)Super - Same as "On", but if you blow up someone, you come back to life. By far the best option.

HANDICAP: You can start a player with additional battle items to try to even things out.

BATTLE ITEMS: I wish there were more items.
1)Bomb - Increases number of bombs you can drop at a time.
2)Fire - Increases the bomb flame.
3)Speed
4)Kick - Ability to kick a bomb.
5)Bouncing bomb - When you kick this bomb it bounces around. This can be bad because it tends to bounce right back at you, but you have the ability to stop the bomb at any point by pushing a button.
6)Penetrating - Flame extends through soft blocks. Especially dangerous.

OVERALL, this is a great version of the classic bomberman battle game which is one of the best party video games I've ever played. It is super simple to learn and play since there is only 1 button you ever need to push. Plenty of different options and layouts are available although it would have been nice if they included every single different board layout and battle item from previous versions. Other things that would have improved the game are Mii integration, allowing more than 4 players at a time, allowing teams to be set up, and online play.

RECOMMENDATION:
-If you already have a previous bomberman game, you can use this review to compare to see if this game adds any value.
-If you don't have a bomberman game but know that you enjoy playing bomberman, then this is a no-brainer purchase.
-If you have never played bomberman but enjoy party games, you can get a party game that has proven itself over many years for just $30 which is a great price compared to most Wii games which go for $50 and are unproven. If you don't want to risk $30, rent the game first to see if you like it. If you end up buying, the total cost will still be cheaper than most other games.

Because this game lacks any kind of online play, the download-able WiiWare game "Bomberman Blast" is the better choice for your Nintendo Wii.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the DS version, February 10, 2008
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars

This review is from: Bomberman Land (Video Game)
Let me start by saying that I absolutely loved Bomberman on the DS. Loved it. My wife and I have played that thing to death. Both the single player and the multi player on that are fantastic.

So I was very eager when I heard Bomberman was finally come out on the Wii! After a couple weeks with it, I'm only so-so on this version; maybe even a little disappointed overall.

The single player is awful. Pure downright stupid minigames that are no fun. Minigames can be fun when done right (Wario, Mario Party). But these are just painful and I would never want to play them. There is some sort of carnival version where you spend tokens on these minigames and blah blah blah, basically it sucks.

There's no awesome 1-player mode. I enjoyed the DS version immensely. The levels were fun, even if they were a little repetitive. My wife even liked the 1-player version after swearing she wouldn't play it!

The Wii version here is fun on multiplayer mode though. But it was fun on the DS too. So not much upgrade there. So if you're buying it to play with multiplayer, it's probably worth the 30 bucks. If you're thinking you might be playing alone a lot, definitely not worth the money.
