Product Description

Amazon.com Review

Bomberman Online sends the Dreamcast out with a bang, bringing this classic multiplayer title to Sega's now-defunct console for the first and last time. For the unfortunate few who missed out on past installments of Bomberman, the game puts players in a maze of an arena, arming them with timed bombs used to blow up boxes and other players. Players can kick the bombs down the narrow corridors for last-second surprises, and when several players all set explosive traps at the same time, things get hectic in a hurry. It's the perfect combination of action and strategy.

The single-player game is surprisingly strong, with many levels and new gameplay modes packed with always-challenging objectives. The classic survival mode is supplemented with fun variations such as the Panel Paint Rule, in which players use explosions to "paint" the floor of the arena, and victory goes to the player who paints the largest area. The game only gets better when one to three other players join in. There's also an online mode for players with SegaNet accounts. Unfortunately, Sega now charges a monthly fee for its online service, and Bomberman simply isn't worth the subscription fee if it's the only Dreamcast game you plan to play online. If you can round up a few friends, however, this is one of the most explosive party games available for the system. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • 3-D graphics spice up the 2-D gameplay
  • Plenty of single-player and multiplayer modes to explore
Cons:
  • Online play requires a paid SegaNet account
  • Single-player modes get stale after a few weeks--this is a true multiplayer game

Amazon.com Product Description

Bomberman Online brings gamers the same addictive battles as in other Bomberman games in the form of online multiplayer puzzles. Players progress through different levels attempting to destroy their opponents by strategically planting bombs and running for cover. Each playing field is constructed out of both destructible and indestructible walls, and it's up to you to position bombs in the right place at the right time. The action gets frantic as alliances and rivalries are made and then broken. Intense battles unfold online when you connect to the Internet and play other Bomberman Online users in Internet battle mode. The new screen-scroll option displays a larger map, making it possible for numerous players to skillfully battle it out at the same time. Five new stages and four new ways to play add to the fun, creating an endless chain reaction of unique and dramatic battles!

Bomberman Online is fun!. There are plenty of different game options to keep things interesting. Finding parts to customize your bomberdude will become an obsession quickly too. The control is spot on. If you get blown up, you have no one t blame but yourself. :P Even if you decide never to go online with it, it'll keep you going for months!

3.0 out of 5 stars Graphically the best, quest mode lacks a little., December 17, 2007
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Bomberman Online (Video Game)
This is to date my third favorite Bomberman game. It stands on its own in my mind away from the others due to its graphical nature. Cell shading is wonderful! I've experienced almost all of the Bomberman series, and most of the new ones just turn me off. The physical look has never been better than what you see in this game!

I do not rate this game highly although for a few reasons;

~The quest mode is a little different that what Bomberfans might be used to. Its still setup as a sort of 'multi-world then kill boss,' but there isn't a -final- boss, which bugs me. Even worse? Theres a stage in the very center of the map...as if there was going to be a final boss fight right there.

~Offline there are no Louis or dinosaurs {I never played online, and am unsure if they were available there}

~Controlling your character is typically done with the digital pad. The d-pad on the standard Dreamcast controller is...lame. The most common replacement controller is the Madcatz controller, which has a slightly off kilter d-pad. This leads you to turning left alot when you mean to go strait, which mostly means you die alot by accident. Sadly my standard Bomberman Online controller is the AstroPad by Performance. This is rumored to aid in the every-so-common controller port failure / resistor blowout on the earlier model Dreamcasts.

But does this game have its perks!

Like Saturn Bomberman, it was playable online!

Like Bomberman 64, there are collectibles that allow you to customize your very own bomberman! {unlike Bomberman 64 although, these custom bombercreations can only be used online, which service is no longer supported}. But it still gives you something to do after you finish the quest mode.

As a huge Bomberfan, this is my 3rd favorite game, mostly because, to me, it is graphically the most beautiful {even more so when compared to say...Act Zero}.

Highly suggested if you own a Dreamcast!

If you don't, but know someone who does, then buy them this game!

4.0 out of 5 stars You dropped the bomb online, baby., January 22, 2004

Bomberman Online manages to breathe new life into an old formula. I love the new rules and hope they show up elsewhere in the Bomberman series. The online games can be fun when there's no lag, but it feels like this is just too little too late in the life of the Dreamcast. Nonetheless, this is pretty good for one of the last DC games. What can I say? Bomberman Online is, in fact, the bomb. Er, da bomb.
