5.0 out of 5 stars Classic, great party game February 9, 2008
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
If you are like me, you are interested in this game for the classic multiplayer battle mode not the single player story mode. Before buying this game, I looked around the internet everywhere for some information about the battle mode but couldn't find much. Most reviews were of the story mode. So after playing this game a few days, here is my review of the battle mode in the hopes it will help somebody else.

If you haven't played bomberman before, here is a quick summary: You play on a single screen and lay 3-second time bombs in the hopes of blowing up your opponents. You can blow up yourself so be careful. There are bombable blocks all over that occasionally reveal power-ups that increase your abilities. It is super easy to learn and each game plays out differently which makes it a great party game. Kids as young as 6 can effectively play.

CONTROLS: Up to 4 at a time and each person will need a wiimote which you hold sideways. Ergonomics leave something to be desired and your hand might cramp up if you play for a long time but it's not bad. It can be tough to control your player if you pick up a lot of speed. You don't need any nunchucks although there is the option of using the nunchuck instead of the wiimote (nunchuck still needs to be attached to the wiimote though). You can substitute a gamecube controller for a wiimote.

Computer opponent skill levels can be set at easy, normal, and hard. You can not set up teams and there is no online play.

BATTLE SETTINGS: Choose your own board layout and other options for the first 4 settings.
1)Normal - You try to blow other people up and be the last one standing. Impression: This is the classic version and very fun.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the DS version February 10, 2008
Verified Purchase
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
Let me start by saying that I absolutely loved Bomberman on the DS. Loved it. My wife and I have played that thing to death. Both the single player and the multi player on that are fantastic.

So I was very eager when I heard Bomberman was finally come out on the Wii! After a couple weeks with it, I'm only so-so on this version; maybe even a little disappointed overall.

The single player is awful. Pure downright stupid minigames that are no fun. Minigames can be fun when done right (Wario, Mario Party). But these are just painful and I would never want to play them. There is some sort of carnival version where you spend tokens on these minigames and blah blah blah, basically it sucks.

There's no awesome 1-player mode. I enjoyed the DS version immensely. The levels were fun, even if they were a little repetitive. My wife even liked the 1-player version after swearing she wouldn't play it!

The Wii version here is fun on multiplayer mode though. But it was fun on the DS too. So not much upgrade there. So if you're buying it to play with multiplayer, it's probably worth the 30 bucks. If you're thinking you might be playing alone a lot, definitely not worth the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't bother with one-player June 3, 2011
Verified Purchase
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
The one-player story mode is about as bad as games get. It's a lot of minigames that are rather difficult, with twitchy controls, and a big casino-like area with terrible movies that you can't skip over. I played it for about two hours and I didn't drop a single bomb. I jumped rope and waddled along a skinny bridge, and I watched a bunch of characters talk to each other. Not fun. When I say bad, I mean really bad.

The classic mode, in which you go around on the different maps dropping bombs to blow up blocks for powerups and blast your opponents, is just fantastic. There are different level sizes, color schemes, maps, characters and more for you to play with, and it's just the right kind of difficult. This is a great multi-player game for a crowd, and should intrigue players of all ages.

It hasn't really evolved since my old super nintendo, but some games don't have to. Bomberman is one of them.

2.0 out of 5 stars Once is enough. May 22, 2012
Fun: 2.0 out of 5 stars
Before I continue, I will admit to being quite the Bomberman geek. Not quite a fanboy, but I do have enough interest in the franchise to always want to check out any titles I have my eyes on, but with enough open-mindedness to not love every Bomberman game I'd gotten (in all honesty, Bomberman Generation is one of the best games I'd ever played, while its "sequel" Bomberman Jetters was a weak-kneed disappointment). And it was with both stars in my eyes and critism on my tongue that I dove into "Bomberman Land Wii".

And...well...I can't say I really liked it.

Maybe it's because it's too different from the usual norm, or that I'm pretty new to the whole "party game" genre, but, in all honesty, I just wasn't able to get into this as I'd done for other Bomberman titles. That being said, I sorta knew what to expect (no adventure mode with lots of things to blow up, just a whole bunch of mini-games with some semblance of a story tossed on), but the overall appeal was quite lacking.

What I won't fault the game on is that the mini-games themselves have a certain amount of creativity involved; whether it's seemingly mundane tasks that is somehow able to excite (collecting coins off of moving logs, leaping on fast-moving lillypads) to forays into regular events (archery) or action-oriented fantasy (shooting octopi or monsters with cannons), each one is different enough from the rest to stand out on its own strengths (and weaknesses, of course). They also run a pretty big gamut of locations, actions, and undertakings; one day you'll be shooting lava balls with a rifle, next you'll be destroying random objects with a samurai sword, and the next you'll be parking a car perfectly. However you slice it, there is no major repeating of ideas here.
