Editorial Reviews

Review

In Flight USA, June 2008
"Zenith Press continues to offer aviation buffs serious and detailed works chronicling the historical and technological aspects of aviation. Two new offerings include Allied Fighters 1939-45 and Allied Bombers 1939-1945. The guides include info about unit formations, aircraft insignia and squadron markings for not only Soviet, US and British aircraft, but for lesser known craft from Belgian, Duth, and Brazilian Air Forces. As usual with Zenith, the text and illustrations are exhaustive and unbelieveably comprehensive."

WWII History, November 2008
"Anyone seeking the definitive reference work on Allied bombers and fighters will be hard pressed to find any better resource than [Allied Bombers 1939-45 and Allied Fighters 1939-45]--the latest addition to Zenith's 'Essential Aircraft Identification Guide' series--from historian and aviation expert Chris Chant. Lavishly illustrated with black & white photos and color artwork, both books contain a wealth of information for the World War II aviation buff and serious historian. Organized by theater of operation, each book describes the various units that were fighting on all fronts and notes the models of aircraft in service with each unit along with their individual and squadron markings...With charts, graphs, and organizational tables accompanying the artwork and photos, these books are essential reference guides for modelers and any enthusiast with an interest in the aircraft of the period."

Accent on Tampa Bay
"The definitive study of the equipment and organization of the Allies bomber units through the war."

4.0 out of 5 stars Allied Bombers 1939-45 : useful, but ..., July 13, 2008

This review is from: Allied Bombers 1939-45 (The Essential Aircraft Identification Guide) (Paperback)
Allied Bombers 1939-45 has many useful tables and illustrations and goes a ways toward helping me reach my goal of understanding the WWII air war in terms of major air engagements, raids, and types of aircraft engaged.

BUT - the book's advertised descripion overpromises what what the book delivers. E.g., "the definitive study of the equiment and organization of the Allies' bomber units throughout the war" and "describes the models of aircraft in service withwith each unit along with their individual squadron markings".

While what is provided is indeed very interesting, there are glaring omissions:
1. The air war in the Pacific and the CBI theaters - totally.
2. The bomber units of Poland, Denmark, Norway, and Greece.
3. The Italian Co-belligerent Air Force.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not very complete, July 17, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Allied Bombers 1939-45 (The Essential Aircraft Identification Guide) (Paperback)
How do you write a book on allied bombers and totally neglect the B29? Not even the index at the back of the book lists the aircraft that won WW2 in the Pacific. Ironically there is an entry for Major Paul Tibbets who later became the Colonel Tibbets that dropped the first atomic bomb on Japan.
Many beautiful side views of most of the major bombers of the Second World War but there is also a total neglect of any top or bottom views.
This entire series of books could have been an excellent addition to any aviation enthusiast's collection but it appears to have been slapped together with an eye towards saving a few bucks rather than presenting any concise or original information. If you can get it cheap ($5?) then spend the money but otherwise pass it up.
