3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but flawed, August 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Bombers of World War II (Hardcover)
This book does a great job of presenting the planes it includes, using may photographs, cutaways, and detailed text and specs., but it has many surprising omissions and inclusions. In the first place, the index lists sections for the A-26 Invader and F4U Corsair but when you turn to the pages indicated you find the HE-177 Greif and the HE-115 float plane. The most glaring omission is that of the B-17 Flying Fortress. How can any book claim to be "comprehensive" and not include the Fort? On top of that there is no mention of any of the American medium bomber such as the B-25, B-26, A-20 and A-26 (except in error in the index) at all. Nor is their mention of the Dornier Do-17Z or the Short Stirling. The two US shipboard divebombers, the Helldiver and the Dauntless, are covered but the TBF Avenger is not. Nor is there any mention of Japanese shipboard bomber aircraft. One also wonder why space was given to 3 planes, the Avro Anson, the He-115, and the Short Sunderland (admittedly an important patrol seaplane, but hardly a bomber), at the exclusion of some of the planes listed above. In short, an interesting book that, had had it been more comprehensive, could have been a great book. Disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good book for modeler !, January 5, 2000
This review is from: Bombers of World War II (Hardcover)
I got "Bombers of World War II" and I am very pleased with the content of this book.

I am not an Historian but I do built WW2 scale models and this book gave me some pretty shoot of bombers, with profiles, 3 plans color view (large profile), striped plane plan (good cutaway for the scrachbuilder) and a good amount of information (all the variants in a good little tabloid resume).

Like always David Donald is using the maximum of colors that can be use in this WW2 subject where it difficult to find them (real photos color form WW2 and profiles). It is not a book of only USAF bombers but luckly of major bombers from all over the world (Swordfish, Mitsubishi "Betty", Savoia-Marchetti, SBD Dauntless, B-29 Superfortress, Tupolev TU-2, ....)

A book for you and a pretty good book to offer!

1.0 out of 5 stars Unfortunate ommisions, June 7, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Bombers of World War II (Hardcover)
Some serious disappointments and omissions. In describing the JU88 the author takes great pains to point out that Junkers hired 2 American experts in stressed skin construction techniques and then denigrates the head of the design team for taking all the credit and not providing any to the Americans. The author fails to name these two people however! Then he leaves out the single most famous and one of the most important bombers of the war - the Boing B17 Flying Fortress

Most disappointing.
