4.0 out of 5 stars Air Attacks Against U. S. Ships!, January 18, 2010
This review is from: Bombs, Torpedoes and Kamikazes (Air Combat Photo History) (Paperback)
BOMBS, TORPEDOES AND KAMIKAZES, Volume 2 in the 'Air Combat Photo History' series, is a 112-page photo book showing various American ships under air attack in the Pacific. From Pearl Harbor to the final battles off Okinawa, USN warships and merchantmen faced increasingly fanatical Japanese air units who eventually substituted 'body-crashing' for conventional bombs and torpedoes.

John Lambert's book is divided into four chapters: 'Early Rounds, December 7, 1941 through 1942;' 'Piercing Japan's Outer Defenses, 1943 through September 1944;' 'Liberation of the Phillippines, October 1944 through February 1945;' and 'The Final Bloody Struggles, March 1945 through August 1945.' After a short historical summary of the period in question, Lambert showcases various photographs showing Japanese aircraft on their airfields or attacking US shipping, American ships firing on attacking Japanese a/c and reeling from bomb/torpedo/kamikaze hits and so on. Because of their nature, a number of the pix aren't the best in terms of quality but talk about dramatic impact!

In short, BOMBS, TORPEDOES AND KAMIKAZES presents a fascinating, in-your-face view of the Navy at war. If anyone thought American sailors had it easy in the Pacific, thye should take a gander at this book! Recommended.
