This four-part, tab-divided book includes:

PART I - THE PRACTICAL BREASTFEEDING MANUAL guides you through the early weeks of nursing your newborn and explains every aspect of breastfeeding basics. It tells you how to prepare for the breastfeeding experience, what to do when your baby arrives, and how to monitor your nursing baby's progress. It helps you identify and appropriately manage early breastfeeding difficulties and common newborn problems. PART II - THE NURSING MOTHER'S NUTRITION AND WEIGHT LOSS GUIDE shows you how to plan a sensible, well-balanced diet to ensure a plentiful milk supply, give you the energy you need to take care of your new baby, and allow you to safely and naturally return to you prepregnancy weight! It shows you how to determine your daily calorie requirement and food group servings to meet your own individual nutritional needs. PART III - THE SIX-WEEK NURSING DIARY WITH THE NURSE-N-TRACK SYSTEM(tm) is a two-part nursing diary for easy monitoring of early breastfeeding progress. It features the Nursing Mother's Daily Nutrition Diary, which allows you to easily follow a sensible eating plan by using check-off boxes to monitor your own nutritional intake; and the Nursing Baby's Daily Diary, which consists of the Nursing Wheel and Diaper Wheel for recording your baby's feeding, sleeping, and elimination patterns--simply by filling in time bars. PART IV - THE NEW MOTHER'S JOURNAL is a place to record precious memories of your first days of motherhood with specific questions, idea starters, and inspirational quotations to inspire creative journal writing.

Also included are a "BREASTFEEDING BABY IN TRAINING--PLEASE, NO BOTTLES OR PACIFIERS" sign for the hospital, an extensive Resource Guide, and an attached dual-colored pencil for making diary entries. The Nursing Diary is a dependable reference for your baby's doctor and lactation specialist, and will allow fathers to participate by making diary entries. Review

Finalist for ForeWord magazine's Book of the Year award -- publisher

I am very impressed with the useful and supportive text and the very clever and unique charting system this book provides for the new mother. The Diaper Wheel is ingenious! I cannot tell you how often I have visited a new mother with a breastfeeding problem and invariably, she will hand me a crinkled scrap of paper where she has faithfully recorded her breastfeeding episodes within a 24-hour period. Never though does she record diaper output, which is even more important than the number of nursings. This is a wonderful and reassuring chart for the new mother, and a valuable piece of information for the lactation specialist. This book provides accurate, affirming "you can do it" information in an easy-to-understand format. The charts and signs are easy to follow and use and will be a boon to the organized and not-so-organized new mother, embarking on her wonderful journey of breastfeeding. -- Sue Huml, IBCLC, Exhibit Manager, La Leche League International

I found this book complete and satisfying, written in a friendly, conversational tone, with excellent advice and many words of comfort for the breastfeeding family. Mothers will be able to find answers to many of their questions here, and will learn to assess how they and their babies are doing. Pediatricians will appreciate the care with which the signs of dehydration and jaundice are reviewed as well as the guidelines for calling the physician. The Nursing Wheel and the Diaper Wheel for recording the specifics of daily events are well conceived. For mothers who plan to keep careful records the wheels will make that chore pleasant and easy. For mothers who do not plan to make such records the wheels will encourage looking at the events of the days with knowledgeable eyes. The New Mother's Journal is also a thoughtful touch. Good job! I am eager to see this book on bedside tables everywhere! -- Elizabeth Baskerville, MD, Author of Baby Basics and David's Kiss

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I could have greatly used a book like this when I was a new breastfeeding mom. I would recommend that readers review it before the baby is born and then use it as a valuable resource once the baby has arrived. The author has given the information that is needed in a simplistic, easy-to-understand format. I hope many moms have a successful nursing experience using this book for guidance. -- Denise Calafato Russo, MS, RD, CDE, Dietitian for High-Risk Pediatrics

This book is just what many new mothers need, an easy-to-follow guide for the first few weeks of breastfeeding. Written in a clear and supportive mother-to-mother style, this book covers all the basic information that a new mother needs to get breastfeeding off to a great start. -- Janet Hoover Malo, LM, IBCLC

This is a wonderful book--both thorough and reassuring--a real must for the breastfeeding mother. It also includes a useful and realistic description of the possible mood instability associated with the postpartum period. -- Barbara Lewin, PhD, Clinical Director of the Center for Postpartum Depression, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Head of Public Relations on the Executive Board of Depression After Delivery (DAD

From the Publisher

With more and more studies consistently confirming the superior health benefit of breast milk, there has been an increase in the number of American women who choose to breastfeed their babies. However while current statistics show that approximately 65% of new mothers are breastfeeding their babies upon leaving the hospital, less than half of these women continue to breastfeed after six months--and most discontinue during the first six weeks postpartum! Today, 48-hour hospital stays for new mothers are sometimes not allowing for the necessary observation and parent education that is needed to get breastfeeding off to a good start. Many new mothers fear that their breast milk is insufficient, since they have no way of measuring how much their babies are consuming. During the early weeks postpartum it is sometimes difficult to tell--especially for first time mothers. In order to ensure that a breastfeeding newborn is thriving, the American Academy of Pediatrics and most breastfeeding experts recommend keeping a daily record of the baby's feeding and elimination patterns, and if necessary, a diary of the mother's own nutritional intake. Yet, there is no formal tracking system available on the market today to offer new parents the tools they need to help them through this critical learning period--UNTIL NOW! We are proud to introduce Bon Appetit, Baby! the first book to feature a formal tracking system for monitoring early breastfeeding progress. The information and tools in this user-friendly book will empower new mothers and help them establish a successful breastfeeding relationship with their babies--and reduce the rapid drop-off rate during the early weeks of nursing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for both new and experienced moms, October 27, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Bon Appetit, Baby! The Breastfeeding Kit (Ring-bound)
I bought this book mainly because the "Six Week Nursing Diary with the Nurse and Track System" seemed like a simple way to keep track of my newborn's feeding habits. Having successfully nursed my first child, I wasn't looking for another "how to" book on breastfeeding. However I found the info in this book was presented very clearly and concisely and wished I had bought it before the birth of my 1st child. It covers all the breastfeeding basics thus making it a good "refresher guide" for experienced moms and a good "getting started guide" for new moms. Plus the nursing diary is wonderful! I recommend buying this book for your basic breastfeeding needs and buying a more complete reference book for info pertaining to specific problems that may arise.

I was scared to death about breastfeeding my second son(my first was bottle-fed). I had read so many horror stories and all the things that can go wrong. This book made my life so much better. Really!! The books gives great encouragement and advice. It also is a great reference if you do have a problem. The New Mom Journal is AWESOME. You can track your feedings and the babies output so you know the baby is getting enough. Definely get this book if you are even considering breastfeeding. It is really the only breastfeeding book you need.
