5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning Surround Sound and Stereo Mix Remaster!, September 20, 2005

Now this is how a DualDisc is done!!! Mercury Records has done a wonderful job with this classic 1986 album. Not only do we get a new August 2005 stereo remaster by George Marino at Sterling Sound, New York, but we also get an excellent 5.1 surround sound mix by Jeff Fura-- which restores some tracks to longer mixes, including "Livin' On A Prayer" and "Raise Your Hands". The real treat here is the new surround sound mix of "Never Say Goodbye", complete with a new introduction! It sounds awesome! The album has never sounded better!

If that wasn't enough, Mercury have generously included the 5 music videos pulled from the album: You Give Love A Bad Name, Livin' On A Prayer, Wanted Dead Or Alive, Never Say Goodbye, and Wild In The Streets -- all directed by Wayne Isham.

The package also includes lyrics, a biography, and photos. The surround sound mix is available on both DVD-Audio players and standard DVD players.

Hopefully we will see DualDisc versions of more Bon Jovi albums to follow shortly.

4.0 out of 5 stars I gotta admit, October 6, 2005
This review is from: Bon Jovi: Slippery When Wet (Audio CD)
I have to say first off I am not really a Bon Jovi fan ,but my wife is a fan so I do hear her playing their music in our home.
That being said, I like to think I am a savvy audio fan. I started out with a small 5.1 system 3 years ago and have continually upgraded by reading different articles and attending trade shows and also by shopping at high end audio visual stores. I love the system we now have even though it cost me an arm and a leg. My wife bought a dual disc version of Slippery so she could listen to it in surround and I have to say strickley from an 5.1 listening experence it is the most exciting cd/dvd I have listened to. Up until now I thought Dark Side of the Moon was the bench mark for contemporary music in 5.1 but this dual disc has now moved into first place for me. There is so much depth and clarity to the mixes, I can't believe I haven't known about their 5.1 catalogue before. If your an audiophile give this a listen, you'll love it. Oh yeah.. Living on a Prayer really does rock. Hope this helps..

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply WOW!!!, September 28, 2005
This review is from: Bon Jovi: Slippery When Wet (Audio CD)
At first I was a little hesitant about buying this album AGAIN. Have had it on Cassette since the day it was released, it was one of the first CD's I ever bought, bought the remastered edition a few years ago, just because (duh!) and when I was shopping for HAND, I saw this was going to be released the same day, well, of course had to pick it up. WOW WOW WOW. The original CD side is better than even the remastered version from a few years ago. And the DVD side? WOW WOW WOW. At first I was lost cause the Stereo mix was exactly the same as it always has been. Then I discovered the Surround 5.1 mix. WOW WOW WOW Makes me want to go and buy an even better stereo system. You HAVE to listen to the new versions and extended versions of some songs and like everyone else, my all time favorite Jovi song is NSG and the new intro???? Makes me pray they do this version on tour this year! WOW. Maybe it's a treasure that Obie's been hiding all along! Darn you Obie!

Like another reviewer said, don't even think twice about this one. Buy it. You WON'T be disappointed. You owe it to yourself if you are a true Jovi fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars 5.1 Wins Again!, January 15, 2006

Anyone who listens to 5.1 surround version of albums already knows how much better it makes the music sound. This album is no exception. Although it seems to lack in bass, it was nice to hear alternate versions of the songs that appear on the original album, most having a longer play time. Add to that the videos that were included and you have yourself a great little "Slippery When Wet" package. And I can't forget to credit the often-too-greedy record companies for releasing this DualDisc at an excellent price!

I have been a fan since 89 and have of course listened to SWW many, many times. Well, until you listen to the High Resolution 5.1 mix of SWW contained on this disc on a good home theatre setup, you have not heard this album at it's best.

The High Resolution 5.1 mix just blows me away in terms of it's clarity and the separation of vocals (both main and backing) and instruments. Jon's voice sounds fantastic. As a bonus virtually every track has been tweaked or remixed to some extent - some more than others ie Livin On A Prayer, Raise Your Hands, Never Say Goodbye. But listen carefully, you'll be pleasantly surprised by all the subtle differences in the tracks.

If you have the right equipment, you should definately get this version of the album. You will not be dissapointed!

I'm just hoping that Island Records release both the New Jersey and Keep The Faith albums in this format. Now, that would be heaven!

4.0 out of 5 stars Stereo Master could be better, August 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Bon Jovi: Slippery When Wet (Audio CD)
One my fave albums of all time. The album itself gets six stars ;o)

I bought this hoping for an 'audiophile' stereo master. I have the previous 90's era remaster and I also bought the recent special edition.

As suspected the new special edition is mastered to be very loud. It sounds ok, probably because the music itself comes from a time when everything wasn't 'in your face' and has some room to breath within the mix. However, with the special edition coming in with average RMS levels of -9.x, I was hoping the stereo mixes on this 'dual disc' would be far more conservative.

Turns out the CD stereo master is only marginally less limited. Average RMS levels of -10.x but unlike the special edition that peaks at something like -0.2db, the dualdisc hits 0db which is another surprise given the risk of inter-sample clipping from the limiting. In reality, it's a much of a muchness as -0.2 is nowhere near low enough to prevent ISCs and lo and behold both masters a riddled with them.

The biggest disappointment of all is that the 'hi-res' DVD-A stereo masters are just as bad! In fact, they are identical aside from being 96/24 vs 44.1/16. This is a disgrace as the DVD-A is supposed to be about the best audio quality. I guess they've just included the 96k version as a bonus (as it will have been created as part of the mastering process anyway) rather than doing a new master for the DVD-A. I'm sceptical about the advantages of 96k/24 for a playback format itself so having the same heavily limited material in this format is no advantage. And for those of you who are interested in frequencies above 20k (whether you can hear them or not)...well, I didn't see any on this master so don't worry ;o)

I should point out that I don't have a surround set-up and perhaps (and it seems from the other comments) that the surround mix is great. Must get surround!!!

I don't know if this will be of any use to anyone as dualdisc is on its way out so I understand, but if I save someone some money then great...Mind you, the album is so good it's probably worth it regardless, haha.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best DVD-Audio In My Collection - 5 Stars!, March 13, 2011
By
Bobby F (South Florida, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bon Jovi: Slippery When Wet (Audio CD)
I just purchased a 2010 Acura TL and it comes standard with a single disc DVD-Audio player from Panasonic designed by Elliot Schiner who is well known for his surround mixes for top bands and performers. Since the format is dying off and/or dead, finding good material is difficult and expensive as most of the good stuff is now considered a collectible. Then I learned about the DualDisc option. Slippery When Wet was a favorite album of mine from the 1980's and has more listenable songs than throw-aways so for $15 I decided to give it a chance. Wow! The remixes in surround sound are unbelievable - especially the intro of "Livin on a Prayer" and "Social Disease" (turn the disc over to the CD side to really appreciate the difference). This is, by far, my favorite DVD-Audio disc and will get hours of playback.
