Editorial Reviews

The stadiums didn't know it yet, but Bon Jovi was comin'! Their 1984 debut nearly lifted the New Jersey band and their hook-heavy rock into the Top 40, propelled by the hits Runaway and She Don't Know Me . Bonus live tracks: Runaway; Roulette; Breakout , and Get Ready .

4.0 out of 5 stars If you don't already have the remaster.... October 14, 2010
By Brian
Format:Audio CD
I was listening to these guys before they hit it big with their third album, and I like this one plenty. But I bought it without realizing I already had the remastered version, which was released a couple years back. The live concert tracks on this disc don't warrant buying the same album twice, as Bon Jovi's concert vocals leave something to be desired. However, if you don't already have the remastered disc, I do recommend getting this, as it showcases their raw talents before the industry polished their material to a blinding luster. The studio tracks are edgy rock most any fan will genuinely appreciate. And I assume the studio tracks are also the remastered versions from the previous release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rawer, darker and more Rock-sounding debut (4 1/2*) November 19, 2012
Format:Audio CD
The first Bon Jovi effort is one of those albums I consider underrated. It isn't overplayed or a radio darling like some of the band's future efforts and it has a special place in my collection. Now I would hardly consider Bon Jovi as an underrated artist because of the band's longevity and popularity and the millions of records they sold, but their debut album is somewhat of a lost gem and forgotten besides the single "Runaway". The songs are noticeable darker than your average Bon Jovi and their sound wasn't as polished and commercial although there are slight hints, this one is a little more rooted in Rock and Roll and takes inspiration from Springsteen and the New Jersey streets. It's one of the reasons I like it so much; It's raw and unpolished and it's also honest and reflective of the period were Jon Bon Jovi was just a struggling musician trying to make it which can be felt here. Another remarkable thing is that the lineup on this album was already the classic lineup: Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora(guitars), David Bryan(keyboards), Tico Torres (drums) and Alec John Such (bass). From the get-go they seemed poised to take over the world and as this effort proves it, they had great songs from the beginning and there's a lot I like on this record probably because it hasn't been played a zillion times on the radio.

"Runaway" was the single of course and the song everyone remembers from BJ's debut. It's memorable for that chorus, heavy keyboard and dark undertones and it's the one song the band continues to play live from this album. It's a fantastic Pop sounding Rock piece and it's a personal favorite after all those years."Roulette" has a surprisingly heavy and aggressive riff considering its Bon Jovi, I consider this one something of an underrated track.

5.0 out of 5 stars bon jovi songwriting meets 80s popmetal February 17, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
just a quick shout out to say how much I loved any bon jovi, so mix it with the 80s popmetal sound & you have pure gold. I loved all the songs on here, the standouts for me being runaway(was the leadoff single, and for good reason) & she don't know me(just one of the catchest pop songs I've ever heard....could be the long lost twin to huey lewis & the news song do you belive in love), but all the songs on bon jovi's debut cd are enjoyable. so yeah, to sum up...I liked it. thanks for reading, and all the best....

3.0 out of 5 stars Extras are ok but... March 9, 2011
Format:Audio CD
The new release of 10 Bon Jovi albums is nice for the consumer who already doesn't own the 1999 Bon Jovi Remasters CD's. Some extra live tracks, new booklets and access to some bonus material on aren't enough reason for me to "Rebuy" these Cd's. The 1999 Remasters sound alot better and have song lyrics included! A money- making ploy no doubt, gotta love it!
